4 student-athletes continue careers collegiately

During recent signing ceremonies, four members of the Class of 2023 signed letters of intent to compete at the collegiate level. Holly Schreiber '23 will join the track & field team at Case Western, Sidney Ware ’23 will run track at Tennessee State University, Kara Grace Hess ’23 will join the swim team at Wheaton College, and Harrison Fitzgibbon ’23 will play baseball at Sewanee.

Wrapping up an impressive career as a multi-sport athlete while on Edgehill, Harrison Fitzgibbon ’23 committed to remain a Tiger as he continues his athletic pursuits on the baseball team at Sewanee. 

Harrison has attended USN since kindergarten and was part of the boys basketball team’s run to the state semifinals in 2022. In his final days at USN, he’s an integral contributor on the baseball team as it continues to compete in the region tournament. 

“I just want to thank everyone at this school for being there for me,” Harrison shared. “From greeting me when I walk through the doors in the morning to showing up for me, and especially [Admissions & Financial Aid Director] Juliet Douglas for coming to every one of my games, you all have no idea how much you’ve done for me.” 

“Harry is here because of the work that he’s put in,” Head Baseball Coach & PE Teacher Mike Gimblette said. “You know he is that guy who is going to get it done; he plays with a lot of heart, and I know he’ll be successful at the next level.” 

Before committing to join Wheaton College’s swim team, Kara Grace Hess ’23 closed out her final season at USN by breaking multiple records. As she leaves the halls of 2000 Edgehill, she holds three school records — 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay. 

“Throughout my college counseling process, above all else, I knew that I wanted to have a strong sense of community at the college that I went to,” Kara Grace shared. “After visiting Wheaton, I felt super excited about having this group of people to do everyday life with, both those on the swim team, and beyond.” 

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to have Kara Grace on the swim team,” Assistant Swim Coach & HS History Teacher Anna Stern added. “At her core, Kara Grace is a gatherer, a connector, a cheerleader, and a supporter, and her ability to do so, not from the sidelines, but instead from the front of the pack, is admirable and will serve her well in every walk of life.” 

Sidney Ware ’23 also will leave Edgehill as a decorated record holder. After trying many sports and extracurriculars during his 13 years at USN, Sidney shifted his primary focus to track during the summer before his junior year. As he heads to Tennessee State University to compete at the Division I level, Sidney boasts USN’s fastest 100-meter and 200-meter dash times. In his final season, Sidney has continuously improved and looks to set even tougher records to break during upcoming region and state meets. 

“I chose TSU because I wanted to go to an HBCU,” Sidney said. “I wanted to go to college somewhere I knew my voice would be heard and I could make an impact as a Black man.” 

“There was a moment last year when he broke the 11-second barrier for the 100 dash, and that’s something that sparks a lot of attention, it creates a lot of chatter. That wasn’t something people were expecting yet. It would’ve been easy for Sidney to doubt himself at a time when other people were questioning his abilities, but he didn’t, and since then, he’s just let his feet and his fast times do the talking,” Head Track & Field Coach & PE Teacher Lindsey Bachman shared.

In February, Owen Block ’23, Collin France ’23, and Townsend Stevenson ’23 committed to continue their athletic careers as well. Additionally, in November, Lily Mozzi ’23 and Auldyn Plant ’23 signed letters of intent to compete collegiately. 

It is common to have five or more student–athletes sign college athletic commitment letters each year. USN has 21 alumni participating in their chosen sport at the collegiate level from the Classes of 2018 through 2022.

  • HS athletics recaps for September 11-17

    Tiger golfers have officially qualified for the region tournament, and our other teams are not far behind. Volleyball sits near the top of the district, finishing up regular season play next week with Senior Night. Girls soccer continues to hold first place in the district after another 9-0 win, and our cross country runners are chasing after some school records. To round it all out, our mountain bike team traveled to Oakfield to continue to improve on their times for the season. There’s plenty more where that came from- so be sure to come out to the River Campus, Sperling Gym, or out on the road to cheer on our Tigers before their seasons end.

    Middle School volleyball and tennis teams are nearing the final games of their seasons, with the competition heating up while the Tigers play to determine their HVAC rankings. Cross country was finally able to race at the River Campus despite the heat, and our mountain biking team traveled to Oakfield, Tennessee, for a high-temperature race weekend.
