It was a cloudy day in Jackson, TN as we set out to play Evangelical Christian School to try and make our way back to the state final four. We started the afternoon with singles and we jumped out to a quick start. Both Henry '23 at line 1 and Simon '24 at line 5 each won their matches 6-1, 6-0. ECS then countered and won at lines 3 and 4, which tied the total match count at two all. Bennett '23 was the last singles match on and ended up giving us the match lead 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win at line 2. Heading into doubles, we just needed to win one out of the two matches. In dominating fashion, the line 1 team of Henry '23 and Bennett '23 secured our ticket to the final four with an 8-2 win over their opponent. We will play CAK in the State Semifinals in Murfreesboro on Tuesday, May 23 at 11:00am. Go Tigers!
Henry '23 and Bennett '23 have qualified for the Individual State Singles Tournament to be held on Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26 based on their performance yesterday in the Individual Region Singles Tournament held at the Lummis Indoor Tennis Center at Vanderbilt. Going into Thursday's tournament, Henry '23 was the #1 seed from our district and sailed through to the final without dropping a game in his two matches. Bennett '23 battled hard beating the #1 seed from the other district in the first round, 8-5. His semifinal round was a rematch from the district semifinal where his opponent got the best of him, but not this time. Even though Bennett '24 got down early, losing the first set 6-4, he never gave up. He worked his way back into the match and won the second set 6-4. With the match tied at 1 set each, they went on to pay a first to 10-point, third set match tie-breaker. Bennett '23 got a quick lead and was able to sustain the momentum defeating his opponent 10-6.
It was a close battle the entire afternoon, but the tigers were able to pull out the win over MTCS in the Region Final 4-2. The afternoon started by splitting the doubles matches. At line 2 doubles, Jude '25 and Collin '25 played hard and started to come back, but ultimately fell 3-8 to their opponents. Henry '23 and Bennett '23 quickly tied the match total 1-1 by beating their opponents 8-3. We were able to pick up the next three out of four singles matches to secure the victory. Henry '23 won quickly at line 1 without losing a game and Bennett '23 at line 2 had a solid win with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Needing just one more win to secure the championship, all eyes turned to courts 4 and 5. Both matches were going the distance having tough battles with long points. Simon '24 clinched the match 4-6, 6-2, (10-3) in the third set match tiebreak at line 5. Play on all remaining courts was stopped once the team secured the match victory. The Tigers will be in action again next week at the River Campus for the Quarterfinals of State Team Tournament. Since we are the #1 seed from the Middle Region, we have a bye for the first round and will await the winner of the #3 from the West or the #4 from the East.
The Tigers had a big 4-3 win over rival distract team Columbia Academy on Wednesday at the River Campus. Each team exchanged wins forcing the doubles matches to decide the outcome. Columbia drew the first win at line 3 singles, but Bennett '23 quickly tied the match score at 1-1 with a win at line 2. CA would win at line 4, but Henry '23 countered with a win at line 1. Line 5 singles ended up being the big match that would give either team the edge going into the doubles. Collin '25 had a huge win over his opponent 10-4 in the super tie-break for the third set. With just one out of the two doubles matches needed in order to secure the victory, the dominate duo of Henry '23 and Bennett '23 took care of business with an 8-1 win. The boys' team will play in the Team Region Final against either MTCS or Webb Bell Buckle early next week.
