  • 3/21 Home Meet #1 - USN Tigers Rise to the Challenge!

    Lindsey Bachman
    Happy Saturday Tigers!

Woweee, Thursday was a tremendous display of effort, determination, competitive drive, sportsmanship, teamwork, flexibility, fun, and TIGER PRIDE! To everyone that gave their time and energy, my student athletes, parents, fellow coaches, and fans, THANK YOU! A track meet is one of the truest displays of a team effort I can think of. From set up, to competing, to cheering, timing, and scoring, it truly takes a village. It is moments like this that I am always the most grateful to be a part of this spectacular USN community.

I know yesterday morning, and perhaps still today, greeted many of you with a bit more soreness than usual. I hope you will consider that a positive reminder of how you embraced the opportunity to push your limits. Each of you ROSE TO THE CHALLENGE which was the charge I gave to all of you at the beginning of the week. Your coaches and I were filled with pride and gratitude leaving the track Thursday night and that was before we even had a chance to look at the results. After carefully combing through all the marks, times, splits, points, and notes from the meet, the list of celebratory efforts and performances is even more exciting than I originally thought. Below are as many highlights as I can reasonably fit in this email, but I am sure more will come to mind as the weekend goes on. If I have left anything out, or you notice any inaccuracies, please feel free to let me know.

    MEET DEBUTS
Doing something for the first time, especially in front of a crowd, can be both thrilling and nerve wracking. Whether it was competing in a track & field meet for the first time, wearing an official USN TF uniform, or the first time competing in a particular event, these individuals embraced this challenge with grace and the confidence of seasoned veterans. Congratulations to our athletes who...
    • Competed in their first official T&F meet - Kieran Carney, Michael Coleman, Caleb Little, Brody Sanders
    • Wore a USN T&F uniform for the first time Gigi Compaglia, Amelia Wilson, Mahalia Moore, Meade Kelley, Oren Schwartz, Ian Drewry
    • Competed in an event for the first time - Alexandria Manoukian(WON shot put!), Zara Campos (WON high jump!), Greta Molvig (2nd in the 800!) Those are crazy impressive debuts!
    PERSONAL BESTS
In addition to all the first time personal best marks set, we had several Tigers who kicked off the season with performances that surpassed their previous best marks from 2023! Starting the season ahead of where you finished your last is not an easy feat for any athlete and is a good indication of improved overall fitness, strength, strategy, and skill. Shout-Out to our athletes who jumped further / higher, and ran faster than ever before!
    • Alexandria Manoukian - fought to the finish so eak out a 0.2s PR in the 400m with a 1:07.7
    • Charlotte Soslow - soared over 7'0" in the PV to PR by over a foot!
    • Greta Molvig - launched her discus nearly 20ft farther than ever before with a throw of 51'6"!
    • Natalie Choe - jumped to a 9inch PR in the LJ, followed by 1.23s PR in the 100m, breaking the 15s barrier for the first time with a 14.87, and finished off her terrific meet with a 1:10 split at 7s PR in the 4x400! For earning significant PRs in ALL THREE of her events, Natalie is our PR Queen of the meet!
    • Adi Jain - earned over a 1ft PR in the LJ with a jump of 12'8"!
    • Krish Nachnani - cleared a 4" best with a 5'0" high jump, and raced to 20.55 110H to earn a 1.04s PR!
    • Charlie Bracket - split a personal best of 2:54 in the 4x800m relay for a 4s PR!
    • Ben Schretchen - pressed hard to finish to earn 3s PR in the 400m with a time of 1:02!
    • James Little - split a fantastic opening leg of 2:40 in the 4x800, a 16s PR, followed by a 13s PR of 6:00 in the 1600m, and topped it off with another tremendous lead off leg effort of 1:10 in the 4x4, a 6s PR!! For earning significant PRs in ALL THREE of his events, James is our PR King of the meet!
    FIRST PLACE FINISHES
Regardless of how competitive a field is, earning first place is an accomplishment to be celebrated! Thursdays meet presented a wide range of competition from event to event. While there was good depth in the LJ, we saw much lighter fields in the other field events, and in the running events, we saw consistent larger numbers in the open sprints and distance events (which makes sense for this time early in the season). While it may seem easier to "do well" in an event with fewer athletes, small fields pose a unique challenge of their own. While the odds of placing and scoring higher are greater, a smaller or less competitive field can make it more challenging for athletes to feel inspired to give their highest caliber effort and performance. While there were a few events with only USN competitors, our 1st place finishing athletes not only had to complete the event legally, which takes skill, many set all-time PRs which is even more of a feat! Congratulations to the following event winners:
    • GIRLS: Zara Campus (4'6" HJ), Charlotte Soslow (7'0" PV), Mahalia Moore (13'6" LJ) and (13.15 100m), Alexandria Manoukian (25'0" Shot Put), Amelia Wilson (26.02 100H)
    • BOYS: Krish Nachnani (5'0" HJ) and (20.55 110H), Ishaan Nachnani (27'11" Shot Put) and (74'4" Discus), Drew Zwerner (2:26.28 800m) and (5:22.55 1600m), and our 4x400m relay team of Krish, Caleb Little, Benjamin Scretchen, and Drew with a time of 4:19.14
    POINT SCORING & MEET RESULTS
Perhaps one of the coolest things about Thursday was that EVERYONE on the team scored points and contributed to our overall team scores! Point scoring at this meet went (10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1).

    Tops 5 Point Scorers
    • Drew (22.5), Krish (22.5), Ishaan (20), Kieran (17), Caleb (15.5)
    • Mahalia (28), Greta (22), Alexandria (18), Zara (17), Natalie (14)
    Team Scores

    • USN Boys - 1st place with 150pts. In a field of 6 scoring boys teams, our Tigers finished ahead of 2nd place Valor by 20pts and nearly 70pts ahead of 3rd place DCA.
    • Combined Team Scores -2nd place with 278pts. In a field of 6 scoring teams, our Tigers finished 123pts ahead of 3rd place DCA, and just 17pts behind 1st place Valor.
Complete meet results are available now on MilesplitNote - In Heat 2 of the Boys 400m, we had a technical error resulting in no times for the heat. In Heat 2 of the Boys 200m dash, time listed for Brody Sanders was run by Ishaan Nachnani.

    REFLECTION
Team, remember what we talked about in practice. Results only tell one part of the story. As you are reflecting on your meet performances and looking to set your goals for the meets ahead, remember to focus in on these helpful questions:
    • How did you feel?
    • What went well and what could have gone better?
    • Where these things related to a particular circumstance, fitness, strategy, or skill?
    • What can you take away / learn to improve for next time?
    UP NEXT
The wait for our next opportunity to challenge ourselves against more competition is not long. The team will travel to MBA next Wednesday, March 27th to compete against MBA, HH, DCA, LA, PCA, and Ensworth

If you have made it this far in this lengthy celebratory email, congratulations and thank you! I hope you all will make time this weekend to recover, rest, reflect, and get excited for another great week to get better!!
