The HS Boys Ultimate team traveled to Atlanta this past weekend for Terminus. After falling in a hard fought final against Atlanta's Midtown High School – currently ranked 24th in the nation – the BG Boys took 2nd out of 14th teams.
Saturday was windy, but the boys did enough to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday morning. In calmer conditions on Sunday, the team faced off against Woodward Academy. Woodward ran its offense through a single talented thrower who presented challenges for our defense. On offense, USN was able to cut through Woodward's matchup and zone looks. We pulled away midway through the game and rode our lead to a 9-7 victory. A major highlight was a towering aerial grab by sophomore Isaac Fulton.
In semifinals, we faced Lakeside High. They were an organized, disciplined team who ran zone defense the whole game. Zone offense requires a lot of patience, and this game demanded a different strategy than our matchup with Woodward. Senior Daniel Gerregano earned a layout block against Lakeside's best offensive player that helped us build momentum midway through the game. As the cap horn sounded, the score was tied 7-7, resulting in Universe Point (next goal wins). After a few turnovers back and forth, Jack Wellons launched an upside down throw that broke open Lakeside's zone to fellow senior Cam Thompson. Cam threw a short pass to Adam Wang for the game-winning goal.
In finals, Midtown opted for aggressive matchup defense. They were a more physical and athletic opponent than we'd seen to that point. In a tight, back-and-forth final, Midtown pulled away and won on hard cap.
Our next tournament is River Campus Classic on April 6-7, so we'll enjoy some home field advantage. The winner of RCC will earn a bid to Nationals. Come support if you get a chance!
