Congratulations to Stewart Hall '25 and Evan Hauser '25 who both played well in the US Chess Federation K-9 National Championship. The duo finished 25th in the country.
By Todd Andrews, Chess Team Coach
Our USN Chess Tigers completed the Middle School virtual chess year with two huge accomplishments.
In the K-9 National Championship, Evan Hauser '25 and Stewart Hall '25 competed over two days and despite only having two out of four members needed to be a full team, finished 25th in the country. Stewart placed 19th overall. Evan finished well in the top half of this tough group. Only the most dedicated players are still roughing the online terrains.
I am proudest of these two not for their results, but for their dedication and their leadership in this tough school year. They shared their joy of our sport with many new USN students in the MS Chess Elective and both of these young men make everyone around them stronger.
Also, Stewart won the 2021 Tennessee Online Chess Championship for students in grades K-8 meaning he will represent Tennessee in person at the 2021 US Open in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in August. Each state sends one representative, other than California which is sends two, to the K-8 Barber Tournament of Champions at this annual event.
USN has been, without a doubt, the largest supporter of scholastic chess in this school year, and it is great to see our scholars bringing home these accolades.
Sgt. Anthony Jones joined University School of Nashville in November as a School Resource Officer, a certified police officer who is primarily assigned to a school and provides safety and security-related functions, including emergency response, safety training, traffic direction, and patrol functions.
University of Virginia selected Margot Ross '24 to be a Jefferson Scholar. The highly selective scholarship includes the full cost of attending UVA for four years of study as well as numerous enrichment opportunities. It has been 16 years since a University School of Nashville senior last became a Jefferson Scholar.
