Celebrate American Archives Month with virtual visit to USN Archive

Have you ever wondered what Peabody Demonstration School students wore to the Homecoming celebration 75 years ago, or if University School of Nashville has ever had a football team? Are you looking for a photo of your aunt or grandfather from their time as a student here? If you’re curious to see and learn more about the history of our school and the students who have walked its halls, we invite you to explore the extensive PDS/USN archives collection.

October is American Archives Month! Archivists nationwide will spend the month featuring items in their collections, emphasizing the importance of historical records, and promoting access to them.

To celebrate the USN archives, I am excited to share our newly updated LibGuides page. With new featured tiles, such as “Recently Digitized Items” and “Archives in the Classroom,” I hope to pique your curiosity and inspire you to dive deeper. The visual layout will inspire you to ask more questions and brainstorm how you may want to use the USN archives, whether you are a teacher looking for items to use for a lesson or project, or an alum or family member researching your own family history.

For a recently digitized highlight from our collection, I encourage you to experience life as a 1921 PDS graduate through Eleanor Brown’s incredibly detailed and fascinating scrapbook. (Tip: give the file a moment to load before browsing. It’s a high-resolution file with around 80 page layouts.)

Want to know more? Try out the “Ask an Archivist” form. I’ve made it easier for you to ask me anything you want! Your question could be just for fun, i.e., “I want to know if my grandmother played basketball when she was at PDS in 1927” or “What did the building look like before the Tibbott Center was added?” For more detailed queries, or if you want to do some brainstorming with me, you can also reach out to me anytime at lbedford@usn.org. There’s something in the archives for everyone!
