The boys' team finished 4th in a tight team race and qualifies for State; the girls' team finishes one spot out of qualifying in 6th, but will send individual qualifiers Madeleine Wiseman and Jackie Seale.
We had perfect cross country conditions for today’s Region Championships - cloudy, drizzly, and cool. The teams did their best to maximize the opportunity - the short explanation is the boys finished 4th (just 6 points separated 1st from 4th) and are on to State next week, and the girls finished 6th, just one spot out of team qualifying, but will send two individuals to next week’s championship.
The boys ran first, mirroring next week’s State schedule, and ran a nearly complete varsity squad (the “band” will hopefully be fully together next week). Jack Fruin stayed in the top five all race long and was joined in the closing meters by Griffin Davidson (racing for the first time since August!), with the two finishing 3rd and 4th. Drew Zwerner, also coming off injury and illness, knocked some rust off and ended up in 16th, just one spot out of All-Region. Caleb and James Little closed out the team scoring, and Mario Tedeschi and Elliott Carlson were well ahead of a lot of teams’ scoring runners. It was an incredibly close race, which could well mean that next week’s State race is a wide-open affair. Stay tuned!
The girls were led as they have been all season by Madeleine Wiseman, who stayed near the front of the race for the full distance, finishing in 7th place. Jackie Seale has been a steadily improving force and ran like it today, finishing 14th and earning All-Region honors. Norah Harrison finished just outside the top 25 as our 3rd runner, with Lyla Ross not far behind. Sydney Lasher ran well in her first Region race as the team’s final scoring runners, and Sadie Mae Bass ran tough, coming off an illness last week. The team just missed out on a spot at State but Madeleine and Jackie will run as individuals and represent the Tigers well!
Our JV teams highlighted the teams’ depth, with the boys winning the JV race and the girls taking 2nd. Greenlee Davidson, Ella Apthorp, Laura Fonseca, and Adelaide Ritter all finished in the top 10 for the girls, and Meade Kelley, Sean Franke, and Paulo Saoud did the same on the boys’ side.
So, except for our State runners, the season is at an end - it has been a whirlwind and wonderful season, and we’re especially grateful to our seniors, to our XC families, and to all the USN faculty and staff that make each season possible!
More to come next week from Memphis.
