Why "Deep Cuts" for the USN Middle School Parent Book Club?

This year, our Middle School Parent Book Club will read “Deep Cuts” by Holly Brickley. This shared reading experience is designed to give parents and families an entry point to the learning their children are engaged in and bring the USN community together around a book. This Book Club will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 30 in the Peabody Demonstration Space in the Hassenfeld Library's West Mezzanine. RSVP here.

One of the reasons we selected "Deep Cuts" is that it is experience-adjacent: It doesn't replicate classroom learning, but instead gives families a new story through which to recognize themes, questions, and ideas that students encounter across Middle School.

The book offers natural connections at every grade level:
  • Fifth grade: Connections to “Ground Zero” by Alan Gratz through its exploration of 9/11 and the ways significant events shape individual lives and memories.
  • Sixth grade: Connections to students’ explorations of different mediums of documenting and storytelling, such as fiction, poetry, podcasting, and songwriting.
  • Seventh grade: Connections to the study and writing of specific narratives, exploring how historical fiction can illuminate both individual and collective historical experiences and how memory and personal perspective shape the way we understand the past.
  • Eighth grade: Connections to “Challenger Deep” and conversations around mental health, identity, relationships, and growing up.
Most importantly, this book club is meant to be fun. It is an opportunity for parents to read alongside one another, connect with the learning happening at USN, and come together for a shared experience and conversation.

Our hope is simple: Read together, connect across grades, and experience a great story as a Middle School community.
