HS athletics recaps for April 24-30

Soccer
The USN Boys Soccer Team beat previously undefeated Goodpasture 3-0 to edge them out for the top of the district. The Tigers finish the district regular season undefeated at 7-0-1. 

Incredible team defending was led by Paulo Saoud, Loch McMillan & Jaymin Pastakia who weathered a talented and athletic Goodpasture team during the early going. As the half went on, USN gradually got their rhythm after creating chances on the counter attack. Braylin Davis scored with 52 seconds left in the half with a wonderful hustle and insightful play to tuck the ball away. 

Inspired creative play by Griffin Davidson & Henry Baxter kept the opponent chasing them. The pair combined for the final 2 goals with a goal and an assist each to settle the matter. 

While there were many good performances, Caleb Little & Abe Boehler deserve credit for holding down the midfield with tough tackling & intelligent distribution. 

The Tigers are 1st seed in their side of the Region Tournament heading into the post season, earning them a super bye. Let’s go, Tigers!

Softball
Last week, the Tigers had a huge 20-6 win against Whites Creek in their second match up of the season. Junior Ruchika Ramachandran started and closed in the pitching circle for the Tigers. Despite three HBP, co-captain Ruchika stayed resilient and earned two strikeouts and two assists on plays at first base.

Offensively, the Tigers were able to get on base, steal around the diamond, and had 14 RBI's as a team. Senior Nevaeh Mitchell also earned another home run, tallying three for the season! 

On Friday, the Tigers battled a whole seven inning game against Nashville Collegiate Prep and while there were some tough errors, there were also some incredible plays. 

Defensively, freshman Brensley Stratton had an incredible game with 13 strikeouts. Following her lead, third baseman and fellow freshman Ruth Boehler was dominant in the hot corner with three of her own putouts with some great tag outs and a pop fly in foul territory. 

Offensively the Tiger's bats ruled by committee, earning 14 hits and 10 RBIs. Junior AB Jones led the team going 3-3 at the plate, Brensley Stratton earned a triple and her first in the park home run, and senior Victor Peng had his first in the park home run. (Tigers now have 10 on the season)!

This was the first game all season where the Tigers played a whole seven inning game and while it tested their mental, their focus, and their energy, they pulled it off together. As the season comes to a close we continue to cherish each moment with the seniors and look towards the bright future of USN Softball.

Baseball
HS Baseball advanced in the playoff bracket after a 3-0 win over Mount Juliet Christian Academy last week. During this game, AJ Truss hit his first home run, resulting in leverage and motivation for the team. Saturday afternoon, they went on to play Nashville Christian, and unfortunately fell 5-1. Though this marked the end of their season, the team showed tremendous growth and bonded together. We are excited to see what next season brings.

Boys Lacrosse
Last Friday, Boys Lacrosse hosted Catholic Academy of Knoxville on Senior Night. The Tigers took the lead right away, with strong defense from Jack Barocas and goaltending by Joey Fried. At halftime, they honored the three seniors on the team- Cinc Cox, Gardner Harris, and Dean Stevenson. They will be so missed on the team next year, but are leaving it in good hands. After halftime, they went on to play a tough second half, alternating the lead. In the end with the seniors playing a pivotal role, the Tigers won the game 10-9. This game marked the end of their season, and we’re excited to see how they grow next season bringing in some talented rising freshmen.

    The girls lacrosse team ended its season in overtime to become state runner-up. Tennis players Carter Kojetin '29 finished as a state quarterfinalist, Sophie Oliver '26 and Mary Kate Adler '28 finished as state semifinalists, and Veer Kodali '29 and Max Parker '29 finished as state champions. Meanwhile, eight runners competed at the state track and field meet in Knoxville, where Griffin Davidson '27, Caleb Freifeld '28, Drew Zwerner '28, and Jack Fruin '27, sprinted to first in the 4x800m relay and Jack also placed first in the 800m dash.

    Middle School Quiz Bowl competes at national championship

    The Middle School Quiz Bowl finished off another successful season with a trip to the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Chicago. The team fought hard and ended the season as a top-100 program in the country, finishing 75th overall. Congratulations to the team on a great performance and to Lucas Lupu ’31, named an All Star for being the fifth-highest scorer nationwide.
