MS athletics recaps for September 11-17

Middle School volleyball and tennis teams are nearing the final games of their seasons, with the competition heating up while the Tigers play to determine their HVAC rankings. Cross country was finally able to race at the River Campus despite the heat, and our mountain biking team traveled to Oakfield, Tennessee, for a high-temperature race weekend.

The MTB team returned to Oakfield, Tennessee just outside of Jackson on September 13 to take part in the second race of the season as part of the 5-race series hosted by the NICA/TICL League. Click here for the full race report.

Volleyball
The 6th grade A team won in a swift two set match against King’s Academy.

In the first set USN controlled the game from the service line. Ali Small '33 tallied up nine aces, Isabel Nadler '33 had three, Juliette Long '33 earned two, and Tennyson James '33 earned her two aces off of two powerful jump serves! Charlotte Wolf '33 and Tennyson James '33 then added three kills to the Tiger's stat sheet. The Tigers won 25-8.

In the second set Ali Small '33 continued her amazing serving performance with thirteen aces (out of 15 serves)! Immediately following, Isabel Nadler '33 tallied six aces, and then Zoë Mathis '33 capped the game off with her own ace. The Tigers won the set 25-6 from their service line, earning 20 of their 25 points off of aces. 

Our 7/8 middle school volleyball team went into this week preparing for a big time matchup when they hosted the Christ Presbyterian Academy Lions. Our varsity and junior varsity Tigers came in ready to compete against one of the best teams in the HVAC. Both teams were in competitive three set matches against the Lions and showed why they’re the tops of the HVAC!

Our JV Tigers got us started off with a 2-1 win against the Lions. USN was led by great offensive performances by Maddie Kim ‘31, Brynn Hillenmeyer ‘31, Emma Zagnoev ‘32, and Zoe Zagnoev ‘32. As a team, the Tigers were ferocious from the service line putting the Lions under a lot of pressure that ultimately led to a great third set win to clinch the match!

The varsity match gave the fans in attendance quite the show as USN and CPA battled for first place in the HVAC. The first two sets of the match were so competitive that both needed extra points to decide the result with the Lions taking the first set and the Tigers taking the second set. In a highly competitive third and final set USN fell just short to CPA dropping the match 2-1 for their first loss of the season. Ayanna Harris ‘31, Clementine Meador ‘31, and Anna Wolf ‘31 were offensive leaders for the Tigers in the match. Defensively the Tigers were anchored with strong play by Kate Jahangir ‘31.

USN has two more matches in the regular season against Ensworth and Valor before they begin their preparations for the HVAC tournament! 

Tennis
The Tigers and the Honey Bears were in action last week at Harpeth Hall for a non conference scrimmage. Prior to the match, Audrey lost a tooth! Lots of things can happen at a MS match!

While the Honey Bears showed skill, our Tigers showed improvement in point construction and net play. Our groundstroke rallies are upward bound. 

Continuing to endure the heat at the courts, the Tigers could not pull out a victory against a strong JP2 team. Pats on the back for Ekat, Charlotte, Olivia, Vivi/Adella and Mae/Sofia. A practice match for Lucy and Dorian rounded out our day.

Their final match is on September 22 against CPA, finishing up conference play.

Both Tennis teams honored all of their 8th graders this week as well, celebrating their last early fall middle school sports season. All of our coaches hope to see these Tennis Tigers on the courts in high school next year!

The middle of the season is where some athletes might hit a speedbump or two while others might find their stride and strategy. Both are great at this stage! Here’s who ran a PR yesterday:
Solomon McKnight tied his PR! (10:43). 
Aston Luers shaved off 5 seconds (14:48). 
Mark Braun improved 7 seconds (15:31).
Tommy Horst got 8 seconds faster  (11:05). 
Booker Ammons took off another nine seconds (13:18). 
Eva Tanquilut chopped off ten seconds (14:53). 
Brody Terker got another 11 seconds faster (11:09).
Elliott Karpinos continued to shave time off with a 13 second PR (11:48). 
James Keiper dropped 21 seconds to get under the 13:00 barrier (12:46).
Margaux Soslow shaved off another 25 seconds (13:14). 
Hudson Unger dropped 31 seconds and is now under the 14:00 barrier (13:33). 
Winston Apthorp improved 36 seconds for a nice clean 16:00 time. 
Elias Freifeld got under the 12:00 barrier with his 37 second drop (11:43). 
William Graves dropped 40 seconds (11:56). 
Sari Zagnoev improved by a minute and 4 seconds (23:24). 
Mila Kennedy dropped a minute and 7 seconds (16:51).
Maddy McKnight was 1:14 faster (19:07). 
Hayden Sasser dropped about a minute and a half (22:19).
Max Arkhipov had the biggest improvement for USN’s 1.5 cerw with his PR by 1:46 (11:41). 
Sadie Magner improved almost 2 minutes (20:55). 
Linus Russell had the biggest improvement on the boys side with his over 2 minute PR (18:17). 
Serena Tanner and Elaina Yu each dropped 2 and a half minutes (16:50 and 20:18). 
Lucy Wilson had the largest improvement of the meet by taking down over 3 minutes from her PR (19:29). 

Win Nelson had a season best– only 5 seconds off of his PR (14:38). 

Also, Allie Jackson ran her first cross country race, and Ava Warren completed her first 2 mile! Yay to automatic PRs!

  • HS athletics recaps for September 11-17

    Tiger golfers have officially qualified for the region tournament, and our other teams are not far behind. Volleyball sits near the top of the district, finishing up regular season play next week with Senior Night. Girls soccer continues to hold first place in the district after another 9-0 win, and our cross country runners are chasing after some school records. To round it all out, our mountain bike team traveled to Oakfield to continue to improve on their times for the season. There’s plenty more where that came from- so be sure to come out to the River Campus, Sperling Gym, or out on the road to cheer on our Tigers before their seasons end.
