Swimming Tigers split with JP2, CPA, SCA

Griffin, Brash, Mauries earn new Top-10 swims; Pretorius earns new state qualifying time
The USN HS Swimming Tigers returned to the Vanderbilt Recreation Center to compete in a triple dual meet against Pope John Paul II, St. Cecilia Academy, and Christ Presbyterian Academy. In this meet format, all swimmers race against each other, and the results of each pair of teams are compared to each other to determine the team scores in the individual matchups.

The combined team earned win over CPA (226-59) and lost a close battle with JP2 (166-158).

In a very competitive meet with lots of close races, the USN girls lost to a strong JP2 team (91-73) but defeated SCA (91-73) and CPA (124-20).

Our girls’ performance was, as much as anything, a testament to the team’s depth. We won only two of the 11 events but were competitive across the board because of our second and third swimmers' strong races.

Kursten Griffin was our only individual event winner on the day, capturing the 50 freestyle and anchoring the winning 400 freestyle relay. In the 400 free relay, Kursten was joined by Abby Liff, Lucy Mauries, and Mia Pretorius, where they won a close race with JP2 in the final 25.

Notably, Kursten’s 100 backstroke earned her a new spot on the USN all-time top 10 list, as did Lucy’s 50 backstroke leading off the 200 medley relay. Other strong swims came from:

-Arianna Bendell, who dropped over three seconds from her previous best in the 200 freestyle
-Lauren French, who swam an in-season best in the 200 IM
-Mia Pretorius, who had strong races and in-season bests in her secondary events to help the team
-Tatiana Barbic, who swam in-season bests in the 50 and 100 freestyles

USN's boys earned wins over JP2 (90-70) and CPA (102-39). Our boys’ roster size doesn’t afford us the same depth as our girls’, but they were successful by winning nine of the 11 events.

The boys were led by two double winners, Ian Brash and Sage Sasaki. Ian captured the 50 and 100 freestyles, and Sage took the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Ian’s 50 freestyle time (22.38) moved him up to third on the USN all-time Top 10 list.

Senior captains Graham Shockley and Elliott Clark added individual wins of their own, winning the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectively. Stefan Pretorius was our other individual winner of the day, taking the 100 backstroke and earning a state qualifying time in the process.

Other standout performances came from Wyatt Washko, who earned two lifetime bests in the 200 and 500 freestyles.

The team will conclude divisional meets next Thursday, December 6 against Brentwood Academy.
