The annual Ultimate Frisbee River Campus Classic was held this February 25-26. This was the largest field of teams USN has ever hosted with a total of 12 boys and 6 girls teams. Teams came from Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky. The weather was dismal Saturday and cleared some for Sunday’s rounds but that doesn’t stop Ultimate.

The girls field hosted Paideia Groove, Independence Flight, Paideia Junior Varsity, Pi, a new team from Hillsboro High School, and, of course, USN Brutal Grassburn. Brutal Grassburn girls started strong, winning over Paideia JV 13-0. The team's second game was against Independence Flight. The girls fought hard and came out with a 9-6 win for a 2-0 start. Next, USN played a reseed game against the powerful Paideia Groove. Paideia's speed and energy helped it to a 12-2 win. That ended Saturday’s play.

Sunday began the Championship Round of play. Because USN won the pool play in its division Saturday, Brutal Grassburn drew a first round bye and played the Pi team from Kentucky. The game was back and forth and, unfortunately, USN lost on universe point, 9-8. However, the girls learned a lot of valuable lessons to take into their next tournament. Play continued with the talented Paideia Groove earning the Championship trophy for 2023.

Working as a team, each individual played hard and exemplified the true spirit of the game. This earned USN's girls the Spirit Award for RCC 2023. The girls' next tournament will be held in Arlington, Virginia at the end of March.

Meanwhile, the USN boys Ultimate Frisbee team defended its home fields during the RCC, finishing with a record of 4-2. The team relied on strong defense, with Jack Wellons '24, Giri Peters '23, and Daniel Gerregano '24 all recording layout blocks, flying through the air to deny their opponents. USN's offense is a work in progress, but it improved throughout the weekend. The boys will head to Arlington in late March as well where they'll face national competition.
