Swimming Tigers tune up on Senior Day
The USN Swimming Tigers hosted Cookeville High School yesterday in an unscored, exhibition dual meet. This was our one true home meet of the year, a day that we set aside to recognize the class of 2019 for their contributions. Thanks to the spirited efforts of Coach Richard Rosenthal and the rest of the team, who shouted out each senior prior to his or her final individual race, and Dena Meiste and Kimberly Manz, who created our first-ever senior banners to display, it was a good show of energy in our first full-team meet in nearly a month.
On the girls' side, our individual winners included:
-Mia Pretorius, who won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke
-Kursten Griffin, who won the 40 and 100 freestyles
-Abby Liff, who won the 200 freestyle
-Annie French, who won the 100 breastsroke
This meet gave us a chance to put together some interesting relay combinations. In the 160 medley relay, the all-sophomore team (Lucy Mauries, Sheeline Yu, Lauren French, and Gracie Li) edged out the all-senior team (Mia, Ashleigh Grindon, Annie, and Isha Upender). In the 160 freestyle relay, youth prevailed again, as Lauren, Lucy, Kursten, and Caroline Cramer defeated Mia, Annie, Tatiana Barbic, and Abby. The 320 freestyle relay offered us a glimpse of the future, as Kursten, Caroline, Arianna Bendell, and Lucy) put together a strong swim, which bodes well for the future.
On the boys’ side, individual event wins came from:
-Ian Brash, who won the 200 freestyle
-William Grobmyer, who won the 40 freestyle
-Sage Sasaki, who won the 100 butterfly
-Stefan Pretorius, who won the 100 backstroke
-Elliott Clark, who won the 100 breaststroke
Wyatt Washko posted a significant improvement in the 200 freestyle and now sits less than a second off the region qualifying time. The boys’ 320 freestyle relay was also a highlight, as it pitted two very closely matched squads against each other. Ian, Wyatt Washko, Graham Shockley, and William Grobmyer just edged Sage, Arnav Reddy, Elliott Clark, and Stefan Pretorius.
The team travels to Sewanee on Saturday to participate in the Snowball Invitational, then begins to look ahead to the Region and State championship meets.
