Alumna returns to campus for Buhl Lecture

By Juanita I.C. Traughber, communications director

Washington Post reporter Roz Helderman '97 and USN parent Jon Meacham speak at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 4 in the Auditorium.

Washington Post political enterprise and investigation reporter Roz Helderman '97 and Random House Executive Editor and Executive Vice President Jon Meacham will answer the question “What Should We Do About Truth in Journalism?” during the Buhl Lecture.

The Buhl Lecture Series began at USN in 2001 to honor the intellectual vitality of the late Arthur H. “Mike” Buhl, an esteemed USN faculty member. The purpose of the annual lecture is to honor Buhl’s commitment to a life of the mind and to inspire intellectual discourse among our high school students and faculty.

Helderman graduated from Havard University and has worked at The Washington Post since 2001, covering local news in the Washington, D.C. region before joining the national staff to cover Congress in 2011. She was awarded a George Polk Award for investigative reporting in 2013 in recognition of her coverage of gifts and loans accepted by the governor of Virginia. Since 2015, she has done national investigative reporting, focusing on presidential candidates in both parties prior to the November election. Most recently, she has been exploring President Donald Trump’s possible ties to Russia.

Meacham, a USN parent, joined Newsweek as a writer in January 1995, became national affairs editor in June of that year, and was named managing editor in 1998. In 2006, he was promoted to editor-in-chief. He has also written essays and reviews for The New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times Book Review.
