HS athletics recaps for August 28 through September 2

The girls soccer team earned a trophy at the Smoky Mountain Cup and earned a 8-1 finish over Friendship Christian School. Golfers beat Mount Juliet Christian Academy. Our football co-op heads to Nashville Christian. Volleyball teams crushed the MidTN Volleyball Classic. The mountain biking team survived the heat in Columbia for their first race of the season at Chickasaw Trace trails. Read on for details on how the Tigers fared over the last week.
Girls Soccer

The Girls Soccer team traveled to Rockytop Sports World last weekend to play in the Smoky Mountain Cup. On Saturday, they started the day with a 2-1 win over St. Agnes School. Johnsie Dawkins ‘28 grabbed a pair of goals with assists from Hannah Smith ‘30 and Alexandria Manoukian ‘28. After lunch and some much needed rest, the Tigers headed back to the field to play Montgomery County. A gutsy effort from the entire team kept the Tigers undefeated with a 1-1 draw in their second match of the day. The tying goal came with 5 seconds left on the clock as Hannah Smith ‘30 assisted Johnsie Dawkins ‘28. The team spent the rest of Saturday doing schoolwork, setting goals for the season, and playing team building games together. Sunday morning, the team headed out to their final game of the tournament versus Henry County. With excellent play on the entire field, Tigers won the game 4-0. Hannah Smith ‘30 got a hat trick with Lainey Theobald ‘27 adding to the score sheet as well. A great full team effort all weekend resulted in USN lifting the trophy to win their division in the Smoky Mountain Cup for the first time ever! Way to go, Tigers! 

After a packed weekend, the Tigers played Friendship Christian School on home turf on Tuesday. The girls made a statement in their second district game with an 8-1 win before heading into a well deserved break for retreats & a long weekend. With seven different players contributing through goals or assists, USN continued to showcase their all around team effort. After playing their 5th game in 6 days, the team will retake the field against Davidson Academy on Thursday 9/10.

Golf

Our golfers headed to Pine Creek to play a match against Mount Juliet Christian Academy. Wyatt Murphy ‘30 and Elliott King ‘28 played their first ever competition joined by Henry Baxter ‘27, Daniel Law ‘27, Max Parker ‘29, and Gil Jones ‘29. The Tigers secured their first win of the season with a score of 169-230. Wyatt with a 44, Elliott with 49, Daniel with 44, and Gil finishing in 43 solidified their win against MJCA.

Football

The football co-op team with DCA dropped to 1-1 on the year after a 36-15 loss against visiting Jackson Christian. They will travel to Nashville Christian on Friday with a 7pm kickoff.

Volleyball 

The Tigers competed in the MidTN Volleyball Classic over the weekend. The JV team competed in not ideal heat conditions with 6 players and absolutely crushed the day! Highlights include an overall record of 3 match wins and 2 match losses, winning a set 31-29, wins over Lipscomb Academy, Harpeth HS and Springhill, making their way into the GOLD bracket as a top JV team and ending their day just shy of the semi finals match. It was a great day for our JV team. 

The Varsity team left a big stamp on this weekend as well. They finished the weekend with an overall record of 4-2 with wins over Smyrna HS, Rockvale HS, MLK HS and Jackson County HS and with competitive losses against the talented Goodpasture and Brentwood Academy. The varsity too made their way into the GOLD bracket as one of the top varsity teams. Also working with a smaller roster, the varsity team really showed out and got a ton of great play! It was a solid weekend for the USN Tigers! 

On Tuesday, both teams competed against Nashville Christian School for the second home game of the year. Varsity won 3-1 against NCS, making their record 2-1 in District play. The game had four very competitive sets, with changing leads and strong plays on both sides. In the end, the Tigers had stronger play and secured the win. JV also found success against NCS with a 2-0 win. 

Mountain Biking

The mountain biking Tigers kicked off the 2026 race season on Sunday at Chickasaw Trace trails in Columbia. 16 cyclists in MS and HS competed across mutiple categories, taking on 1, 2 or 3 laps (4, 8 or 12 miles), with many riders improving lap times by several minutes compared to last year's race on the same course. Based on the new NICA/TICL scoring and placement system, the HS team placed 8th out of 10 for Div. 1 teams, and the MS riders placed 9th out 19 Div. 2 teams.
