University School of Nashville celebrated a major milestone at its River Campus with a special ceremony unveiling a new state-of-the-art lighting system. The project, which illuminates a majority of the campus’s athletic fields, marks a significant investment in the future of USN athletics and student experience.

According to USN Athletic Director Josh Scouten, the initiative began with a simple but meaningful outreach.

“The project came together after one of our alumni reached out to our Director of Development, Anne Westfall, to see how they might help improve the River Campus facility for our athletes,” Scouten said.

What followed was a series of conversations centered on long-term priorities for major campus improvements.

Among several items on the Athletics Department’s wish list, field lighting quickly rose to the top.

“The decision to light a majority of the fields was of particular interest as the goal was to help promote and improve the experience for as many of our students as possible,” Scouten said.

Because of the scope of the project, additional funding was required to bring the vision to life. Westfall and the Alumni & Development Office played a key role in connecting donors and securing the support needed to complete the project.

The benefits of the new lighting system are both immediate and long-lasting. With the addition of field lights, USN athletes and coaches will no longer be limited by daylight hours — particularly during seasons with shorter days or when inclement weather delays start times. In past years, such disruptions often led to canceled or rescheduled practices and games.

Now, teams will have greater flexibility and consistency in their schedules. One exciting plan already in place for the spring season includes hosting Middle School and High School games back-to-back, strengthening connections and camaraderie across different levels of the program.

The lighting project also resonated deeply with alumni supporters, including Bob Doochin ’58.

“USN/PDS is a great school — past, present, and future,” Doochin said. “I guess in a sense that I wished to repay an institution from which I received so very much. The facilities at the USN River Campus will indicate our commitment to athletics. I was thrilled when the lights came on.”

As the lights shone brightly for the first time during the ceremony, they represented community generosity, long-term vision, and a shared commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience.

USN looks forward to seeing all of its athletes benefit from the new lighting system throughout the spring season and for many years to come at its beloved River Campus.
