Race #3 for the MTB team at Lock #4 trails, Absi claims team’s first podium
Steve Smail
The 3rd race of the NICA-TICL season was held at Lock 4 Park in Gallatin, utilizing the very familiar 4.5 mile loop that’s been in our race series for more than a dozen years. The middle school team moved its way into the top 10 of 28 teams, and 9th grader Elsa Absi powered her way into a 5th place podium spot in the JV3 category.
Our 17 HS racers began to hit their mid-season form at this race, with HS team points accumulated from Elsa Absi’s 5th place finish in JV3 out of 25 girls, Adeline Miller’s strong 8th place in JV2, and top 20 finishes for both Allen Chen in JV3 and Claire Dehner in JV3 (despite Dehner's crash mid-race). All 4 of our points winners improved their time from a year ago from at least 3 minutes to more than 10 minutes. Absi’s race was smooth and strong for her 2 laps of 9 miles total with consistent 29 minute laps.
Veteran rider Charlie Blau had our team’s fastest single lap in 24:29 finishing his 2 laps in an impressive 50 minutes, followed closely within a few minutes by Avery Savona (who lost his contacts) and Allen Chen. Our big group of JV3 girls lost Sylvie Mackler early in the race due to a dramatic crash in a dust-filled corner, but Brianna Castro led the remaining group with a 34 minute first lap, followed by Arianna Washington, Suzie Zhao, Asha Guha, and Clio Cherry-Pulay who suffered a mid-race chain issue but was able to get across the finish line. Our remaining JV2 and JV 3 boys were led by Aidan Harris who posted 2 great 26 minute laps (12 minutes faster than a year ago) with Seth Hauser just 20 seconds behind, and then Charlie McNultyand Basil Broemel. All posted 2 laps, each at least 5 minutes faster than their times the previous year. Overall the HS squad claimed 19th place out of 29 teams for the total results after 3 races.
Our small crew of 7 mighty Middle School racers accumulated points from Ella Murdock, Rosie Hauser (2 impressive laps at 34 minutes each), Sarah Absi and Emmett Cheney (who had a 28 minute single lap race). Barry Chen posted amazing 26 minute laps but in a large and super-fast field of 8th graders finished 29th. James White and Julian Schultz Sevin raced with the big 6th grade field, each posting a 35 minute single lap. Their efforts moved them into 9th place of 28 teams after 3 races.
On October 5th, the team travels to Johnson City to ride a brand-new set of trails at Winged Deer Park. The series concludes after fall break in Chattanooga at Raccoon Mountain for the State Championship race. See the full season results here: https://tennesseemtb.org/events/results/
