First Offensive Battle of the Season

Katie Roth
Gotta keep fighting on offense and keep it clean on defense!
It was a beautiful day for softball! It just so happened that that beautiful day landed on a Monday. And similarly to Garfield, this team hates Mondays. As a young team the Tigers will eventually grow out of that mentality, but it’s hard to come back from a weekend with no practice and jumping into another game. The first inning was super exciting with USN keeping the Antioch High School Bears to 3 runs and then the Tigers turning their bat on early getting up to 4 runs!

Then the 3rd inning was just wild for both teams. The Bears earned 9 runs and the Tigers matched them at 9. Both teams were capitalizing on fielding/pitching errors, and both teams were just making a lot of fielding/pitching errors.

In the 4th inning the Tiger’s fielding woes continued and the Bears were able to find many opportunities to steal and run the bases efficiently. Then Aniotch earned 2 great triples, capping off their inning with 8 additional runs. At the bottom of the 4th Antioch was able to buckle down and make solid plays, despite the Tigers hitting hard grounders and battling in the box. Due to the sunset the game had to end early with only 4 complete innings.

Despite the errors and frustration it was a super crazy and exciting game and showed a lot of maturity from this young, developing softball team. They were able to continue to cheer each other on and lift each other up and keep battling despite the game falling the other way. It was great to see the constant leadership from Co-Captains Asauda Radford and Caroline Keiper, the two pitchers, Alena Ellis and Ellie Rothman, and from Amelie Soslow bringing the energy from center field. These players demonstrated the team’s culture of toughness throughout this game. They were aggressively stealing bases and 6 of the 10 that batted got hit by a pitch(s): Jessica Penilton, Asauda, Amelie, Caroline, Eleanor Molvig, and Alena (twice)!

Alena Ellis pitched 2.5 innings and ended with a total of 85 pitches, 2 strikeouts, and a 42% strike percentage. Ellie Rothman closed the game and in 1.5 innings pitched 61 pitches, earned 1 strikeout, and finished with a 46% strike percentage.

This game was everything from fun and frustrating to sloppy and disciplined, but at the end of the day this team got closer, they got tougher, and they got better. This game will elevate this team and forever be a game to remember. Let’s keep pushing Tigers!
