Sam '23 places 1st in regional science fair

Through his research, Sam Lustig '23  concluded that protein knockdown technology is the preferred method of treatment for some prostate cancer patients.
Sam Lustig '23 won the Cellular/Molecular Biology category of the Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair at Belmont University on Friday, March 25.

He writes, “In my project, we introduced a compound called A1874 to prostate cancer cells. The compound is a proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) which degrades the intracellular protein, BRD4. BRD4 is amplified in numerous prostate cancer phenotypes – the protein plays a role in chemotherapeutic resistance and facilitation of tumor proliferation. There is a current standard-of-care BRD4 inhibitor, but the problem with this inhibitor is that it has lower specificity for the protein and inflicts cell death at higher concentrations in a reversible process, whereas, A1874 targets BRD4 in an irreversible process. We showed that A1874 inhibits prostate cancer cell proliferation at low concentrations in BRD4 over-expressive prostate cancer cell lines. Thus, targeting BRD4 via protein knockdown technology provides promise over classic inhibition as a possible targeted therapy for prostate cancer patients with heightened BRD4 expression."

  • HS athletics recaps for September 3-10

    The Tigers have come back strong after time away on retreats & a holiday weekend. While golf is nearing the end of its season, cross country and mountain biking are still at the beginning. Both teams are heading away to races this weekend. Girls soccer and volleyball are about halfway through their regular season competition, both teams with exciting district wins and more games to be played determining their standings for post season competition.

  • MS athletics recaps for September 3-10

    Our Middle School teams have been crushing the courts this week. With strong performances by all volleyball teams and wins for both boys and girls tennis, the Tigers aren’t slowing down as they reach the midpoint of their seasons. Mountain biking will hit the trails for race No. 2 this weekend, and cross country runners crushed their first home meet.

  • Mountain Bike Team Race #1 Report - Chickasaw Trace Trails

    The Mountain bike team began its 13th season as it almost always does, with anticipation high and mindful of the high heat on the trails on the banks of the Duck River at Chickasaw Trace park outside of Columbia, TN. Over 650 mountain bikers in grades 5-12 from across the state competed at this first race of the NICA-TICL season.
