Lend a hand or voice

High School service leaders are sharing opportunities to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although group volunteering and drives at USN are not feasible right now, there are still ways the USN community can aid Nashville. Read on to learn about three ways to serve health care workers, Metro Nashville Public School students, and Nashvillians in food isolation.

Storytelling
There are a few Metro Nashville Public Schools who would like to have individuals record themselves reading a children's book. The plan is to create a collection that families can access by computer or smartphone. Click here to watch video Sylvie Babat ’20 read “Little Pea” and make your own. You do not need to show yourself; visuals of the book are best so that young readers can follow along. Upload your video recording to Google Drive or another file sharing service and email the link to Director of Service Learning Mike Jones.
 
Making face masks
If you would like to donate homemade face masks to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt University Medical Center Hospital, or Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, then click here for instructions on how to hand sew face masks.

Donating food
Thousands of families in Nashville struggle to get food, especially right now when children don't have access to school meal plans. The High School frequently holds food drives before Spring Break and Fall Break to help Edgehill families who rely on school breakfast and lunch. Consider donating food or money to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee to help these families during this difficult time. You can also volunteer at Second Harvest to help sort and package food. Click here for more information on the food bank’s needs and procedures during COVID-19.

    Middle School Quiz Bowl competes at national championship

    The Middle School Quiz Bowl finished off another successful season with a trip to the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Chicago. The team fought hard and ended the season as a top-100 program in the country, finishing 75th overall. Congratulations to the team on a great performance and to Lucas Lupu ’31, named an All Star for being the fifth-highest scorer nationwide.
