Tigers Topple Lipscomb, St. Cecilia
The USN Swimming Tigers hosted our first meet on Tuesday, November 12, competing at the Vanderbilt Rec Center against St. Cecilia Academy and Lipscomb Academy.
The girls’ team earned wins over St. Cecilia (111-45) and Lipscomb Academy (125-10). Kursten Griffin and Abby Liff earned two wins each, with Griffin winning the 200 and 500 freestyle and Liff winning the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Both girls earned state qualifying times in each of their events. Other event wins came from Lauren French, who won the 100 butterfly, and Lucy Mauries, who won the 100 backstroke.

Other strong swims came from:
-Iris Li, who dropped 12 seconds in the 100 backstroke,
-Leala Nakagawa, who dropped 5 seconds in the 100 breaststroke
-Ivy Cochran, who swam lifetime bests in the 50 and 100 freestyle
-Caroline Cramer, who swam a lifetime best in the 50 freestyle
The boys’ team earned a win over Lipscomb Academy (93-12).
Since Lipscomb’s roster was small, this meet gave us an opportunity to create some exciting intra-team racing. Sage Sasaki and Stefan Pretorius sat out the 200 medley relay in exchange for the 200 freestyle, and both swam lifetime best swims as a result. The all-USN 100 breaststroke led to some strong swims, with Milo Schumann’s new state cut being the biggest highlight.
Double winners for USN’s boys were Sage Sasaki (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Ian Brash (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle). Wyatt Washko won a close race in the 500 freestyle, just edging teammate Arnav Reddy by a second. Both were well under the Region cut and Wyatt's swim was a lifetime best by 20 seconds. For his part, Arnav had a strong 100 fly as well and looked like a true butterflyer in the making!
