Ultimate Frisbee hosts tournament to kick off season
USN's Ultimate Frisbee athletes hosted one of the season's earliest tournaments at the River Campus leading to predicted success throughout the season based on strong performances over the weekend-long tournament. Continue reading for an in-depth look at how the tournament unfolded.
USN’s Ultimate Frisbee team, Brutal Grassburn, revived its annual River Campus Classic on Saturday, February 19 and Sunday, February 20. The Tigers hosted one of the first Ultimate Frisbee tournaments of the season. Attending were 14 teams from Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The boys' division hosted nine teams, and the girls' division hosted five teams with over 160 players participating in all.
The weather cooperated all weekend although the wind picked up Sunday. The teams began play early Saturday morning. Rivers Edge Christian Academy (Knoxville) started out strong and eventually won the boys’ championship on Sunday. A strong girls’ team from Paideia School (Atlanta) won the girls’ championship.
The USN teams were strong competition as the girls' team placed second in the tournament and the boys’ team placed third.
The girls' first game was played against Independence (Thompson's Station, Tenn.). The Tigers played hard against their mid-state rival and came out on top 8-2. In the second game, the girls faced Paideia Groove and, despite a good effort, lost 13-0. The third game of the day, the girls played HemiGroove (Atlanta) and played a tough defense coming out a winner by 9-1. On Sunday morning, the team played SemiGroove (Atlanta). Despite some frustrating wind, we pulled ahead and won. This placed the team in the championship round when we replayed Paideia. Although the girls lost this game 13-2, they played better than the first game with and started to fight back late in the game. Overall, the weekend was considered successful.
Despite having only 11 players on Saturday, the boys managed a 9-8 win against Ravenwood High School (Brentwood, Tenn.) in their first game. The Tigers trailed 8-6 at halftime, but scored the final three points to pull off the win. Giri Peters '23 found Phil Feaster '23 for the final goal. In their next game, the boys faced Paideia. USN led 8-6 at half, but ran out of legs in the second half, ultimately falling 10-8. The boys gritted through low numbers to finish the day strong against Knoxville's Bearden High School. Reinforcements and wind arrived on Sunday morning for quarterfinals against rivals at Independence High School. The team trailed 7-6 at halftime. Cameron Thompson '24 got a clutch block in our end zone on a throw that would've ended the game. Geofrey Friedman '23 found Cameron for a goal on an iso play, and once more, the boys came back for a 9-8 win. Phil and Adam Wang '24 stood out on defense, finishing the game with four blocks each. The wind grew stronger, and Paideia played a disciplined, fundamental game in the semis. We'll see them again in Atlanta at their home tournament in April.
As usual, captains Oliver Entrekin '22, Ian Manz '22, and Wesley Smail '22 led the team. Oliver, Phil, and Jack Wellons '24 led the Clamp Crew with six blocks each on the weekend. Geofrey, Emmett Fulton '24, and Connor Harris '25 did very well in their first ever tournaments.
Our fields at the River Campus were in great shape and received many compliments. There was also strong fan support for our teams and a good number of volunteers who helped pull off a successful event.
This was a strong first showing for both teams. USN will travel to North Carolina in early March and will use this tournament’s experience to expand our skills to compete against some strong regional teams. The trip will create a strong bond between the players which is one of the important advantages of the game.

Spring sports season ends with podium finishes, trophies
The girls lacrosse team ended its season in overtime to become state runner-up. Tennis players Carter Kojetin '29 finished as a state quarterfinalist, Sophie Oliver '26 and Mary Kate Adler '28 finished as state semifinalists, and Veer Kodali '29 and Max Parker '29 finished as state champions. Meanwhile, eight runners competed at the state track and field meet in Knoxville, where Griffin Davidson '27, Caleb Freifeld '28, Drew Zwerner '28, and Jack Fruin '27, sprinted to first in the 4x800m relay and Jack also placed first in the 800m dash.Read More -
