Tigers swim to records at regionals
In one of the most anticipated moments in a swimmer's season, 19 Tigers took to the water at the region meet. The girls' squad took home fifth place, marking the school's first top five finish since 2014. Of the 32 individual events swam, 27 clocked in season records, all six relays were season best finishes too, and Anna Hulan '25 secured a spot on the all-region team. The High School swim team had a strong showing at the region meet on Friday, January 28.
To start things off, Olivia Barbieri '25, Anna Hulan '25, Kara Grace Hess '23, and Caroline Cramer '22 took on the girls' 200 medley relay. The group improved on its seed from 11th to eighth, taking a really good swing at the 1995 school record and coming just 0.2 seconds short.
The boys' 200 medley relay team battled to win its heat and picked up some valuable points in the process. Daniel Stark '23, William Grobmyer '22, Arnav Reddy '22, and Owen Block '23 finished 14th, even with Daniel playing an unexpected substitute role.
Kara Grace Hess '23 had a standout race in the 50 freestyles finishing seventh in a lifetime best after being seeded 17th. In the same race, Emma Schwarz '24 won her heat and dropped half a second, and Ivy Cochran '23 dropped a full second from her season best. USN's boys were four for four on personal best times in that event as well, with William leading the way. Mark Luschen '24 narrowly missed the state cut here with a major drop in his time, and Sawyer Beckwith '25 and Jack dropped time as well.
Olivia S. improved from 15th to 10th in the 100 fly, and Arnav dropped two seconds in that event. Meanwhile Kara Grace and Reika Nakagawa '25 struggled through technical malfunctions.

In the 100 free, Anna led the way, finishing fourth to score some major points. Ivy swam a hard-fought season best by three seconds to win her heat, and Caroline was just off her lifetime best. On the boys' side, Owen, Daniel, Dhruv, and Henry all chipped off their lifetime bests, while Mark's and Sawyer's Hail Mary cracks at the 50 free state cut didn't pay off.
Our lone 500 freestyle, Emma, got it done in style, dropping another 12 seconds off her best time to squeeze under the state cut.
In the 200 freestyle relays, our girls' team — Olivia S., Olivia B., Caroline, and Kara Grace — improved from eighth to fourth. The boys' team — Mark, Owen, Sawyer, and William — took 10th after being seeded 14th. The girls' and boys' B relays also had good swims across the board.
Olivia B. and Reika had strong 100 backstrokes shortly after the relay. Reika earned a heat winner and a best time by three seconds, and Olivia B. swam just off her best and scored big points, finishing 11th.
Shortly afterwards, Daniel and Jacob were the Tigers' only breaststrokers and each came up with best times.
The 400 freestyle relays closed the day out. The boys' team improved from 15th to 10th; William's anchor split at 50.2 was the standout leg. The girls' team battled in the final heat in a big way, improving from seventh to fourth. Olivia S. (55.10) and Anna (53.3) were especially strong at the end of the long day.
After a long, yet successful day, the Tigers look forward to taking 12 student-athletes to the state swim meet on February 11 and 12. Among the 12 are 10 individual qualifiers, including Emma and Jacob who punched their ticket at the region meet, and two relay-only participants.

Tennis players Carter Kojetin '29 finished as a state quarterfinalist, Sophie Oliver '26 and Mary Kate Adler '28 finished as state semifinalists, and Veer Kodali '29 and Max Parker '29 finished as state champions. Meanwhile, eight runners competed at the state track and field meet in Knoxville, where Griffin Davidson '27, Caleb Freifeld '28, Drew Zwerner '28, and Jack Fruin '27, sprinted to first in the 4x800m relay and Jack also placed first in the 800m dash.Read More -
