As the NCAA men's basketball final four unfolded on Saturday, April 1, USN middle schoolers on the quiz bowl team found themselves facing off in a final four as well. After battling their way through a pool of 52 teams at the largest-ever Gallatin Quiz Bowl Tournament, USN students proved dominant with two teams of Tigers remaining as the field narrowed to just four spots.
In one semifinal, USN A (Charlie Blau '27, Basil Broemel '28, Lucia Gellert '27, and Karsen Puzniak '27) faced last year’s champion, White Station Middle School. In the other semifinal, USN B (Ayla Acra '27, Liam Mooney '28, Aaron Raney '27, and Ruchika Ramachandran '27) faced the fall semester champion Brentwood Middle School.
USNA knocked out reigning champions, White State A, with a final score of 485 to 100. Meanwhile, USN B emerged victorious over Brentwood A at 395 to 275. As a result, the final match of the tournament was a face-off between USN Tigers.
USN B got the three first three questions to take an early lead, but USN A came storming back. Although great friends, the two teams battled fiercely to buzz first. The match ended as it started with USN B answering the final question, but it was not enough to retake the lead.
Charlie, Basil, Lucia, and Karsen won with a score of 450 to 210. They were undefeated for the day.
Ayla, Liam, Aaron, and Ruchika took home the second place trophy making school history as now USN quiz bowl team had not previously taken the top two spots in a tournament.
