Tigers Open 2018-19 Campaign

The USN HS swimming team opened their 2018-2019 season with wins over Hume-Fogg, MLK Magnet, and Hillsboro High School on Wednesday, November 14, at the Vanderbilt Recreation & Wellness Center.
 
The girls’ team defeated MLK (123-29), Hume-Fogg (92-69), and Hillsboro (123-22), and the boys’ team beat MLK (96-14), Hume-Fogg (86-62) and Hillsboro (101-2).
 
USN’s girls were led by junior Abby Liff, who was a double winner, capturing both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Freshman Kursten Griffin added a win in the 100 freestyle. The girls’ 400 freestyle relay, composed of Lucy Mauries, Lauren French, Annie French, and Mia Pretorius, also won the event. Both Abby and Kursten were under the State qualifying times in both their races.
 
Our boys were led by two double winners, Ian Brash and Sage Sasaki. Ian, a junior, won the 50 and 100 freestyles; notably, his 50 freestyle was a lifetime best and moved him up to 5th on the USN all-time Top 10 list. Sage, a sophomore, captured the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. His classmate, Stefan Pretorius, captured the 100 backstroke. Both Ian’s races and Sage’s 200 IM were under the state qualifying times.
 
Stefan, Sage, and Ian also contributed to wins in the 200 medley relay (where they were joined by senior Elliott Clark) and the 200 freestyle relay (where they were joined by freshman William Grobmyer). Elliott added a state qualifying time of his own in the 100 breaststroke.
 
Swimmers of the meet were William Grobmyer and Harper Johnston. William posted a big lifetime best in the 200 IM and swam smart races in his first HS meets. Harper, swimming in her first swim meet ever, earned a Region qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke!
 
The team returns to compete on November 26, when they take on Pope John Paul II, St. Cecilia, and Christ Presbyterian Academy at Vanderbilt
