First Grade Visits the USN Wetland

by Lisa Preston, lower school naturalist

In April, the First Grade Naturalists crossed the Mighty Cumberland to visit the USN Wetland.
Our earlier journey to the wetland in the fall was canceled as there was no water in the wetlands, even in the deepest part of the "bowl."  However, this visit had a different ending with lots of water and generous signs of spring.

We reviewed what a wetland is and why it is a special environment. Each class measured the depth and temperature of the water and used nets to collect some of the small creatures that live in the wetland--crayfish, water fleas, water boatmen, and snails.

A walk down the boardwalk proved timely as the male chorus frogs were very vocal.  As First Grade naturalists enjoyed the chorus around them, they recorded what they saw, felt and wondered, then drew a picture to capture it all~
