The Beginning of a New Era

A strong showing in the first scrimmage of the season. USN bested St. Cecilia 10-8 in a fun, cold game!
Thursday’s scrimmage against St. Cecilia was a very anticipated day for USN softball! This is the second consecutive season for the renewed Tigers. New dugouts, some new swag, new faces, and new possibilities! Another great opportunity for this program to grow and take a step in the right direction! As the Tigers began warming up, it was evident that there were some nerves, but with some great leadership from the Tiger’s senior and juniors the nervousness was channeled into excitement!

The first batter up lead to the first out of the season; a ground out to Zahra Ansari ‘27 at second for an easy play at first. St. Cecilia was then able to get on the board first due to an error, but the Tigers kept it tight with great pitching and catching work from Ellie Rothman ‘25, Jessica Penilton '24, Caroline Keiper ‘25 getting the Tigers the last two outs. The Tigers came out with patient bats and strong base running, which earned them a 5-1 lead at the end of the first. The biggest blow was a single by Yvonne Thomas ‘25 that drove in two runners! In the second inning St. Cecilia and USN traded 2 runs for 2 runs and then things came down to the wire in the 3rd inning.

St. Cecilia earned 5 runs in the top of the third. Though the Tigers got 2 early outs, between some walks and errors, and St. Cecilia’s strong base running, they were able to finish the inning strong. With the score 7-8, USN had to come out aggressive in the 3rd to regain the lead and win the scrimmage. With some great hits from Ruchika Ramachandran ‘27 and Yvonne Thomas ‘25 the Tigers were able to run in 3 players to take the lead and win the game!

There were standout plays everywhere! Zarhra Ansari ‘27 had multiple stolen bases on top of her solid defense throughout the game. Amelie Soslow ‘25 continued her campaign of being our most consistent offensive weapon from last year with bunts, hits, and stolen bases. Our team's leaders/infielders – Caroline Keiper ‘25, Ellie Rothman ‘25, Jessica Penilton ‘24, Elenor Molvig ‘25, and Asauda Radford ‘25 – kept the communication up and continued to get to their spots and showed off some of their hard work they’ve been putting in the past two years!

While mistakes and errors will always happen, this team played the right way and it was beyond exciting seeing them play again. They played more composed and more smoothly, a marker of confidence and experience. Please continue to watch and support this team as they begin their season with the goal to get better and build something exciting! Let's keep getting better everyday, go Tigers!
