Over Time Thriller!

The Tigers earned a hard fought win in OT!
Wednesday evening, the USN Tigers trekked all the way to Hendersonville to play the Knights of Pope John Paul II. The Tigers immediately came out shooting, with everyone finding open space and taking quality shots threw their motion offense. The ball was moving on offense and on defense the Tiger’s had each other’s back on the help side! Both teams were earning ticky-tack fouls early. This turned the game into a chess match with offenses relying on drives and post ups and defenses having to be more thoughtful to prevent early foul trouble. The Knights earned most of their points from second chance points, while the Tigers found success in their offensive versatility. It was a game full of pride and excitement since the Tigers would score on drives, but then adjust to the defense by taking a drive, but then kicking out to their teammate on the wing for an open jump shot! The first half ended 12-12.

At the beginning of the second half, the Tigers struggled finding their offensive groove because the Knights started to press full court. In comparison the Knight’s offense were steadfast on their strategy, utilizing their drives and post ups in the paint. The Tigers were quick to adjust and found weaknesses in their press. This led to more confidence and amazing fast break opportunities and plays. As the 4th quarter came to a close, the Knights knocked down many tough shots and the Tigers kept pace with team defense (only allowed the Knights to score 4 points in the 4th) and aggressive team offense (closing the gap with 6 points). The game ended up going into overtime, 25-25, with both teams excited from the amazing game they’ve played so far. In a last minute flurry, the Tiger’s offense put up 5 points and their full court press defense kept the Knights at 3 points! USN pulled out an overtime win 30-28!

Everyone was a notable player in the super awesome game! Everyone scored at least once, everyone got at least 2 rebounds, and everyone played help side defense and ran in transition. The growth from this team has been super fun to watch! Zoe Russell ‘29 ended the game with 2 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 block and was the defensive anchor throughout the game. Ruth Boehler '29 did an awesome job controlling the game as the team’s point guard and ended with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and a block of her own! Charlotte Kehler '29 helped win the game down the stretch with her drives to the basket and ended with 7 points and 3 rebounds. An amazing team win with the Tiger’s demonstrating how far they’ve come in terms of understanding basketball concepts, team plays, and how to compete with fun and love being the most important thing! Go Tigers!
