Tiger Make a Debut Splash!

Syd Lindblom
Our Tigers got off to a GREAT first meet! It was really fun to see everyone out there racing, and it made me incredibly excited for what we can accomplish moving forward. Many of you are most excited to hear the results, and I can report good news: USN defeated BGA in their first swim meet! Here's the breakdown:

GIRLS: USN- 73; BGA- 46
BOYS: USN- 102; BGA- 39
OVERALL: USN- 175; BGA- 85

Our Tigers got off to a GREAT first meet! It was really fun to see everyone out there racing, and it made me incredibly excited for what we can accomplish moving forward. I appreciated how great our team was at supporting everyone in the pool and the ways that more experienced swimmers stepped up to make sure that everyone understood what was going on. We did not have a single no-show for any events, which means that everyone was paying attention to the meet and using their resources to figure out when and where they were racing.

Of course, many of you are most excited to hear the results, and I can report good news: USN defeated BGA in their first swim meet! Here's the breakdown:
GIRLS: USN- 73; BGA- 46
BOYS: USN- 102; BGA- 39
OVERALL: USN- 175; BGA- 85

Since this was our first meet, many of our athletes were entered with no time, but we did have some athletes drop time from previous seasons*! Here's who improved:
  • Griffin Johnson dropped 5 seconds in his 200 free (2:32.48) and 5 seconds in the 100 breast (1:31.20)
  • Elliott Karpinos dropped 4 seconds in the 100 fly (1:19.56)
*Swimmers with USA Swimming IDs were entered with their best times according to the organization. Of course, our pool is 20 yards, which means that these times are all unofficial.

At most dual swim meets like ours tonight, the top five finishers in each individual event score points for their team. However, no more than 3 swimmers from each team can score. For relays, the top 3 teams score, but no more than 2 from either team. This is why you may see an "x" in front of some of the times-- that just indicates that 3 or more USN swimmers finished before that swimmer.

We had lots of victories tonight! In fact, we won fifteen out of the twenty events we competed in. Here are USN's event winners:
  1. Girls Medley Relay: Maggie Weiss, Rose Theobald, Claire Yu, Nicola Auman
  2. Boys Medley Relay: Ian Drewry, James Michels, Peter Weiss, Elliott Karpinos
  3. Nicola Auman (200 free)
  4. Elliott Karpinos (200 free)
  5. James Michels (160 IM and 100 free)
  6. Yother Phillips (40 free)
  7. Claire Yu (100 fly)
  8. Peter Weiss (100 fly)
  9. Rose Theobald (100 free and 100 breast)
  10. Maggie Weiss (100 back)
  11. Ian Drewry (100 back)
  12. Girls Free Relay: Nicola Auman, Claire Yu, Rose Theobald, Maggie Weiss
  13. Boys Free Relay: James Michels, Griffin Johnson, Elliott Karpinos, Peter Weiss
Winning events helps, but meets can be won by bulking up on second, third, and fourth place finishes as well. The following swimmers also earned points in individual events: Nicola Auman, Ian Drewry, Lucy Garrison, Layla Jahangir, Elliott Karpinos, Nora Maragno, Devin McAteer, Adeline Miller, Krish Nachnani, Yother Phillips,  Henry Sloane, Owen Spangler, Peter Weiss, and Zoe Wei. Keep up the good work!

Some great things cannot be measured with times or points. Here are some other things I loved seeing this afternoon:
  • Many of our athletes today had never competed in a swim meet, so they deserve an extra round of applause! It can be scary to get in the pool and show everyone what you got, but it is almost always the right choice to get a little uncomfortable to try something new.
  • It is always great to see swimmers waiting in the pool for the rest of the competition to finish their race. This is great sportsmanship! This was especially true from Elliott Karpinos and Griffin Johnson in the 200 free since they had to wait quite a bit!
  • Three swimmers finished races (and raced HARD) despite having goggle malfunctions: Brooks Lukach, Owen Spangler, and Meade Kelley.
  • Not only did Claire Yu ask if she could swim the 100 fly at this meet, but this was her FIRST competition 100 fly, AND she had to swim it by herself! That's some grit!
  • Nicola Auman also volunteered to swim the 200 free, and she swam a strategic race with a strong push in the final 40.
  • Ian Drewry thought the 100 back was done at the 60 mark, but he figured out what he needed to do quickly and got back down to work!
  • Krish Nachnani was willing to swim whatever was needed of him and readily agreed to a last-minute switch in his events.
As a final note on tonight's meet, thank you so much to all of our parent volunteers! Again, we cannot have meets without volunteers. It sounds like you all had a good time as well though since we already have three of our timer spots for next week filled! They're going fast, so if you are interested in getting on deck, let me know as soon as possible!
