On Thursday, January 19, the Tennessee Department of Education announced Sheerea Yu ’23 as one of two Tennessee students selected to represent the state in the United States Senate Youth Program. As a result, Sheerea is invited to attend the 61st annual Washington Week in March where she’ll participate in a comprehensive, interactive leadership program.
According to the Department of Education, selection is based on “academic accomplishments, community service, knowledge of current American government issues and procedures, and demonstrated leadership for the current school year.”
In the weeklong program, Sheerea will hear major addresses from government leaders including senators, cabinet members, and officials of the State and Defense Departments. Additionally, she’ll tour iconic Washington, D.C. locations like the U.S. Supreme Court, the Pentagon, and the various Smithsonian Museums. As one of 104 student delegates selected — two from each state, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Office of Dependents Schools — Sheerea will receive a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies as well.
As part of a longstanding tradition, retired teachers and professionals from USN over the years came together to celebrate, connect, and reminisce during their annual luncheon in Durnan Auditorium.
It is common to have five or more University School of Nashville student-athletes sign college athletic commitment letters each year, and this year, USN saw eight more student-athletes commit to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. USN has several alumni participating in their chosen sport at the collegiate level from the Classes of 2021 through 2025.
