Medical experts encourage COVID-19 booster, flu shot

USN's Medical Advisory Board and Health Team recommend faculty, staff, and students receive both the flu shot and COVID-19 booster this fall. Visit vaccines.gov for locations or contact your health care provider.

If you follow USN’s weekly COVID-19 tracker, you are likely aware that we had a number of active cases shortly after we returned to school. Fortunately, in the past couple of weeks, we have held steady with only two or three cases school-wide at a given time. However, as we near the autumn season with fewer masks on campus and more indoor gatherings on the horizon, now is an opportune time to consider how we might prepare to keep ourselves and our community as healthy as possible.

You may have heard that the FDA recently approved an updated, bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster. This new vaccine protects against both the original viral strain, as well as the dominant forms of the omicron variant that are circulating. The effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines wanes over time, and this new booster is meant to provide better, more targeted protection and reduce the risk for serious complications of the virus. The Pfizer booster is recommended for individuals ages 12+ and Moderna for ages 18+, who have not received a booster dose within the past two months. The CDC tool found here can help guide your decision-making.

Our Medical Advisory Board continues to meet biweekly and strongly encourages faculty, staff, and students to receive both the flu shot and COVID-19 booster this fall. Flu shots are also widely available and safe to receive simultaneously with the COVID-19 booster. Please visit vaccines.gov for locations or contact your health care provider. Here is a FAQ sheet that you might find helpful, and, as always, feel free to email healthroom@usn.org with questions or concerns.
