The Peggy Weil Stein Excellence in Visual Art Award is presented each year to a student who embodies our visual art program. This award, made possible by Peggy Weil Steine, a 1937 graduate of Peabody Demonstration School and recipient of the PDS/USN Distinguished Alumna Award, was a noted patron and champion of the arts, particularly visual arts.

She was appointed the first chair of the Metro Arts Commission in 1983, serving a second term in 1989. She worked tirelessly to promote the arts and support local artists in Nashville. Along with her late husband, David, she was an avid collector who generously shared her insights and enthusiasm. She was a founding member of the Nashville Symphony Association, the Adventure Science Center, the Nashville Institute for the Arts, and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
She was proud to have three children and four grandchildren graduate from PDS/USN.`

Many students pass through our studio doors here at USN. Some will specialize in one discipline and others will try to experience it all. And among this group of creatives, there will be a few who become the definition of what it is we are trying to accomplish. Waverly Tibbott '20 is one of those students. She is the granddaughter of Christine Slayden Tibbott, an accomplished artist herself, and former PDS art teacher for whom our arts building is named.

Waverly has been carrying on and absorbing the legacy of her grandmother since birth. Her entire life has been filled with art and artmaking. She watched on as her grandmother and both parents immersed themselves into every kind of art project imaginable. At an early age, Waverly was given materials to use and explore side by side with her family. And as she has grown older and more independent, she has painted murals, made puppets, created scenes for theater, and is well on her way to becoming an accomplished artist.

For Waverly, art is her passion and way of life. Every part of her life is heavily influenced by art and creativity, including her work, her surroundings at home, and her bold personal style. She is a positive thinker, outspoken, hardworking, and confident in her abilities and always supportive to others.

And while this is only a brief view through a small window into her accomplishments and her background, each of us here has a story to tell about Waverly. She is an artist we admire and will miss.
