USN off to Strong Start at State Meet

Yesterday was a good start to the state meet -- we began with the girls' 200 medley relay, where Lucy (31.1), Harper (35.8), Caroline (31.8), and Ivy (27.9) beat their seed time by over two seconds (2:06.8).  Lauren (2:05.6) and Abby (1:59.5) had excellent drops in the 200 freestyles, and in the 50 freestyles saw best times from Milo (23.5), William (23.7), and Stefan (22.9), and some a near-miss from Lucy (27.1).  The only real setbacks of the morning came from two DQ's in Sage's IM and Ian's 50 free, which were disappointing but ultimately technical fixes and not indictments on our speed.  So we felt excited for some big swims today...
 
Today was an absolutely GREAT morning; Coach Scouten brought lots of good karma with him.
 
We began with strong 100 best times from Lucy (59.8), Lauren (57.8) and Kursten (55.1), and from William (51.6). Caroline (1:00.3), Ian (48.8) and Ivy (1:02) were strong as well, just shy of their bests from Regions. 
 
In the 200 free relay, the boys' team of Ian (21.37, breaking his own 50 school record leading off), Sage (23.5), William (23.2), and Stefan (22.4) qualified 10th with 1:30.6, a season best by a full second.  The girls' 200 free relay team of Lauren (26.9), Abby (25.4), Lucy (26.1) and Kursten (25.1) moved up to 20th, the third fastest time in school history with a 1:43.7. They finished 20th, moving up 5 places from their seed and just shy of finals.
 
Stefan came back a few moments later to drop a big best time in the 100 back (56.7).  In the 100 breast, Milo (1:02.1), Sage (1:05.0), and Abby (1:09.2) had all trong swims, with Milo's time a lifetime best by 2 seconds.
 
Closing out the morning, the boys' 400 free relay team of Ian (48.7), Sage (52.9), Stefan (52.2), and William (51.6) were 18th with 3:25.5, a season best by two seconds; they'll be an alternate tonight.
 
The girls' 400 free relay team of Abby (55.6), Lauren (58.1), Caroline (59.4), and Kursten (54.4) best their Regions swim by 6 seconds, earning a finals spot by finishing 15th in 3:47.7
 
Everyone's in good spirits, and we're excited to have some great opportunities to race tonight. We are super proud of how these kids have managed the challenges and the ups and downs of the big moment.
