State Cuts Met at McCallie

A quick prelim recap:

After an unexpectedly eventful trip here, we have a host of finals swims in a really fast meet.  This experience, I'm convinced, will set us up well to compete on larger stages later on this season.

In the finals we'll see:

-the boys 200 medley relay (Jacob, Milo, Arnav, Owen)
-Kursten in the 50 free
-Ian in the 50 free
-Kursten in the 100 free
-Ian in the 100 free
-the girls' 200 free relay (Lucy, Ivy, Abby, Kursten)
-the boys' 200 free relay (William, Sage, Stefan, Ian)
-Abby and Milo in the 100 breast
-both girls' and boys' 400 freestyle relays

It took a little bit for us to get going in the morning, but when the 100 free came around, and Eleanor, Ivy, Daniel, and Wyatt won their heats, the USN team kind of came to life.  Lots of season bests and lifetime bests and big swims all around; the swimmers' good spirits and resilience in the face of our unexpected setback has been great to see.

New cuts today included:
-Lauren French, who punched her ticket to the State meet with a best time
-William Grobmyer, who earned state cuts in the 100 free, 100 breast, and the 50 free leading off the 200 free relay
-Eleanor Shepard, who earned her first Regoin cut of the season in the 100 breast (dropping 7 seconds from her previous season best)
-Daniel Stark, who earned his first Region cut in the 100 free

-Wyatt earned a new Region cut in the 100 free, dropping from 1:02 to 58.0

Finals Recap:
Here's what tonight entailed:

-the boys 200 medley relay (Jacob, Milo, Arnav, Owen) -- dropped FOUR seconds from their prelim time and moved up two places -- all four boys were faster than prelims,

-Kursten in the 50 free -- dropped from 25.8 to 25.5

-Ian in the 50 free -- was just off his prelim time, going 22.2

-Kursten in the 100 free -- dropped from 56.5 to 55.9

-Ian in the 100 free -- was just off his prelim swim, going 50.6

-the girls' 200 free relay (Lucy, Ivy, Abby, Kursten) -- dropped nearly two seconds from prelims, going 1:47.7, which was just off earning a spot on the USN all-time top 10 list

-the boys' 200 free relay (William, Sage, Stefan, Ian) -- dropped a tenth from prelims, earning 12th and getting a spot on the USN all-time top 10 list (1:34.0)

-Abby in the 100 breast -- DESTROYED the consol heat, dropping from 1:13 to win consols in 1:10.6

-Milo's 100 breast -- improved to 1:05.6, a lifetime best

-Girls' 400 free relay:
The "B" team of Caroline (1:02.0), Tatiana (1:07.1), Sheeline (1:04.3), and Ivy (1:02.9) had all strong splits, and the "A" team of Lucy (1:01.2), Lauren (1:02.7), Abby (59.9) and Kursten (58.7) were all tough and also TIRED.  Caroline's best time leadoff was probably the highlight swim, and Sheeline looked like a 200 freestyler in the making.

The boys' B team of Jacob (57.5), Daniel (58.7), Arnav (59.3) and Wyatt (57.3) kicked things off, and the "A" team of Stefan (54.2), William (51.9), Sage (53.1) and Ian (50.0) closed out our meet.  This was USN's fastest non-State performance in school history, notably.
