Girls team falls 91-68 to SCA; Pretorius, Barbic earn new Q times
The USN swimming Tigers hosted Cookeville High School, St. Cecilia, and Brentwood High School on Monday, December 9 at the Vanderbilt Rec Center. Only the girls’ matchup with St. Cecilia was a scored divisional meet, and our competitive but shorthanded girls’ team fell 91-68. Despite the loss, our team goals of racing with confidence and earning some new qualifying times were achieved.

The USN girls’ only event wins came in the 200 freestyle, where junior Sheeline Yu took first place, and the 400 freestyle relay where Lucy Mauries, Eleanor Shepard, Tatiana Barbic, and Lauren French won to close out the meet on a positive note.

Senior captain Tatiana Barbic, our girls’ swimmer of the meet, earned two new Region qualifying times and had two season best times. Other strong performances came from a host of 9th graders:

-Eleanor Shepard swam lifetime bests in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, and contributed a solid butterfly leg to the girls’ “B” medley relay.
-Leala Nakagawa showed some strong sprinting on same he 200 medley and posted best times in the 50 free and 100 back
-Ivy Cochran scored points in both the 50 and 100 freestyle and swam lifetime bests in both
-Iris Li dropped 8 seconds in the 100 backstroke and earned a best time in the 50 free as well

On the boys’ side, junior Stefan Pretorius kicked things off with a new State cut in the 200 free, thanks in no small part to teammate having Sage Sasaki in the lane next to him. Stefan’s early speed and Sage’s unorthodox (and patient) race strategy made for an electric finish, with Sage pulling out the win.

Another highlight of the meet was a race among teammates, where freshman Jacob Rothman and junior Wyatt Washko swam stroke for stroke for the first 125 yards. Jacob pulled ahead for the win but Wyatt continued to chase, and both emerged with improvements of ten seconds over their previous lifetime bests.

Similarly, sophomore William Grobmyer and freshman Milo Schumann, both breaststrokers, had a great battle in the 100 butterfly. William edged out Milo for the win in the final 25.

Some of the only races that weren’t close belonged to Ian Brash. Ian won the 50 and 100 freestyle; notably, his 50 was the fastest swim in USN history outside his own school record.

The Tigers will resume competition in January at the Sewanee Snowball Invitational, with our senior day dual meet soon after on January 14.
