Nine members of the hard-working Middle School Quiz Bowl team did not rest over Fall Break. Instead, they competed at the 14th Annual Fall Invitational Gallatin High School Tournament, which attracted teams from all over Tennessee and as far away as Mississippi and Alabama.
It was the first tournament for Indy O’Hare ’32, Sulaiman Moskinzada ’31, Lucas Roschke ’31, Ekaterina Schreyer ’32, and Eliana Wolf ’32. Despite their inexperience, they won their first match against North Pontotoc from Ecru, Mississippi, and continued to buzz fast during the morning rounds. Their success earned them a spot in the highest play-off bracket, the Gold Division. Their reward was a match against the number one seed.
It turned out that the number one seed belonged to Elliott Carlo ’32, Max Haber ’31, Lucas Lupu ’31, and Zoey Wei ’31. They had earned the coveted first spot by going 5-0 in the morning rounds and winning by an average of 501 to 87.
Obviously, only one USN team could win, and in the end, Elliot, Max, Lucas L., and Zoey moved on. After being upset in the quarterfinals, they went on to win their final two play-off games with scores of 620-40 and 525-95. As a result, they placed 5th in the tournament. Indy, Sulaiman, Lucas R., Ekaterina, and Eliana finished 12th.
Individually, Lucas was the top scorer of all participants. Indy and Lucas R. were 13th and 18th, respectively.
The players thank alumnus Eric Rosenthal ‘15 for coaching a team and the many parents who supported them in their success.
