Hear how the cross country team started its season in this week's athletic recap from Athletic Director Josh Scouten.
Cross Country
USN hosted a preseason 2-mile time trial at our beloved USN River Campus on Saturday evening. The girls took off first, but one of their biggest victories of the night occurred before the race even started. 16 Tigers gathered in our pre-race team huddle. The girls toed the line alongside two of the state's top teams, Harpeth Hall and BGA, and for the next two miles, they gave it their all to deliver impressive veteran and debut performances! Madeleine Wiseman ‘27 led the way, looking as strong and confident as ever, followed by fellow junior vets Jackie Seale ‘27 and Adelaide Ritter ‘27, who both ran notably faster times than they did in last year's season opener. Rounding out our top seven were cross country newcomers Sadie Mae Bass ‘28, Sydney Lasher ‘29, and Kenzie Miller ‘27, with returning senior Laura Fonseca ‘26 coming in just under the 17-minute mark. First-time racers Ella Apthorp ‘29, Rose Theobald ‘29, Imaan Salad ‘29, Emmeline Self ‘29, Mia Seltzer ‘29, and Billie Forrester ‘26 all gave tremendous efforts, no doubt spurred on by the encouraging and exuberant cheers of fellow teammates Greenlee Davidson ‘29, Lyla Ross ‘26, and team manager Alexa Khazanov ‘26.
The boys had only the BGA boys’ team to race, and the Tigers ambushed the Wildcats, with USN taking the first six runners across the line, led by a pack of four in Drew Zwerner ‘28, Griffin Davidson ‘27, Caleb Freifeld ‘28, and Jack Fruin ‘27, all within about 15 seconds of one another. Caleb and James Little ‘28 dueled each other to the line not long after, completing the scoring sweep. There were so many outstanding performances - from seniors like Mario Tedeschi ‘26, Sean Franke ‘26, and Braun Moore ‘26 to first-timers like our gaggle of freshmen who are the future.
All in all, it was a wonderful start to the season. A huge thank you to all the families and friends who came out to support and sweat it out with us! Our first formal 5km competition is this weekend at the Hermitage, late-night style. Feel free to come out or wait for another scintillating race report!
