HS athletics recaps for December 5-11

Climbers continue to show improvements with several podium finishes. Girls and boys swimmers finished fifth and 12th at the Snowball Invitational at Sewanee University. The boys basketball team picked up two wins in five days. And bowlers knocked down their final pins as the season closed. Keep up with our student-athletes by following USN Sports on InstagramFacebook & Twitter.
Climbing
On Saturday 12/6, we had Lorenzo Barrera-Vinha, Jack Barrett, Elliott Carlson, Larabi Clark, Alice Cramer, Leo Dobson, Erin Ilagan, Cate Laird, Sparrow Lucca, Hannah Mackler, Lucas Nichols-Loller, and Evan Valentine competing in an ASCL competition. USN swept both podiums with Hannah on top, followed by Erin and Cate for the girls.  Hannah was ranked toward the top of the league nationally last season, and this was her second time atop the podium this year.  Erin and Cate, both also come from competitive climbing backgrounds, are scoring big points for the team and could make their own runs in the national rankings, we shall see what the future holds for them.  Just off the podium, Alice and Sparrow who both do not come from climbing team backgrounds had strong performances, with Sparrow improving on her strategy from last competition and scoring way higher and Alice fighting tooth and nail on some tough routes to earn points.  That tenacity will treat Alice and the team well throughout the rest of the season.  Please congratulate all these athletes, as everyone has improved massively throughout the season, and we have a few more comps to go.

The boys on Saturday also had a strong showing, sweeping their second podium of the season, but with different athletes in different positions.  Coming into the season, Jack Barrett was poised to have a strong showing, after being high in the national rankings last season.  Freshman Elliott Carlson however has been giving him a run for the crown.  Our first competition this season had Elliott on top of the podium with impressive ascents of the hardest roped route in the comp and some nails, hard boulders, and Jack in second place.  This Saturday however, Jack just squeezed ahead of Elliott for the first position by climbing some impressive boulders and putting in a strong effort on the roped climbs.  Our first competition of the season had Lorenzo in 3rd, but the competition on Saturday had Lucas in the 3rd position.  It’s going to be an exciting rest of the season as we see how these athletes do against each other and competitors from other schools and across the country.

We were back at it again on Sunday 12/7 in Murfreesboro for a school league competition, with the whole team. Unfortunately, some athletes from Saturday elected to give their skin a break and some other students sat this comp out due to finals, but we still showed up with about 20 athletes.  Almost everyone improved on something from the last school league competition which is great to see. Harper Hughey and Mason Lack deserve shout outs for trying really hard and putting up big personal scores.  The podium today was topped by Elliott Carlson with Jack Barrett in 2nd, and a climber from Ensworth in 3rd. The team did so well overall that we should win the school league this season once again, but I do not yet have that confirmed.

The students are very supportive of each other, do a great job of sharing route information, and helping others strategize between climbs. Even though they are competing as individuals as well as a team, there is always support and grace between everyone. All the athletes are embodying the sportsmanship and camaraderie in line with the ideals of USN while pushing themselves to be the best they can be.

Basketball
The high school basketball teams were in action over the last week. Despite some solid play against Grace Christian in the second half, the Tigers lost by three after a CC Cook three-pointer cut the lead in half in the final moments of the game. The Tigers returned to action at home on Tuesday against Merrol Hyde and dropped another single digit loss. Zara Campos ‘28 led the Tigers with 24 points in the game.

The boys team picked up two wins in five days with a nice road win to kick off district competition over Mt. Juliet Christian on Friday and a home win over Merrol Hyde on Tuesday. The Tigers had a high paced game against Grace Christian in the middle of the wins and couldn’t keep pace for the win. Braylin Davis has been the leading scorer in each of the games with a strong contribution from Jamison Jackson on Tuesday night for the 81-62 win.

Bowling
The bowling season officially came to an end this week for the boys and girls teams. The boys lost to Donelson Christian Academy on Tuesday with Jackson Green ‘26 picking up the only point for the team in the match. He led the team with a 137 average in his two games.

The girls team dropped a heartbreaker with a 16-11 final against Pope Prep. The team started a little off their scoring pace in the first American game, but rallied to win four points in the second American game which put them in a tie at 8-8 going into the decisive Baker games. Both teams had nervous starts to the first Baker and the Tigers broke the tension with the first closed frame with a spare followed by a strike that put them ahead for good in that game. A second straight trip to the State Tournament was thwarted in the second Baker. Jones Crumpton ‘26, Rinn Sullivan ‘26, and Caroline Stinner ‘27 had huge games to lead the Tigers. Huge shoutout to the seniors who helped lead the resurgence of the girls team three years ago on a fine career together.
