HS athletics recaps for October 11-24

Our girls soccer team wrapped up a successful season last week, hosting Grace Christian in the regional quarterfinals, while the mountain miking team completed its fourth race of the season at Winged Deer Park. Read the latest from Tiger Athletics in this week's recap from Athletic Director Josh Scouten.
Girls Soccer
Over Fall Break, the team hosted Grace Christian in the region quarterfinals. Laila Fierce ‘27 scored a first-half goal to put the Tigers on the board. Ansley Martin ‘27 and the USN defense kept GCA off the scoreboard through the first half. The Lions connected early in the 2nd half on a scoring opportunity to even the score. The Tigers and Lions exchanged several chances, and USN held possession through most of the second half. The game looked like it was headed to overtime until the Lions scored on a long ball over the top of the defense with 17 seconds left in regulation.

The Tigers have plenty to look forward to next season and will miss the contributions of their five seniors —Darcy Dove ‘26, Agnes McLemore ‘26, Annalise Rudolph ‘26, Cecilie Schmidt ‘26, and Saffana Whitt ‘26.

Mountain Biking
As a brand-new venue to the NICA/TICL race series, the Winged Deer Park trails presented an interesting challenge for the mountain bike team. A long, slow, and steady half-mile grass climb transitioned into a mile-long segment of single-track trail punctuated by many rock gardens that often had no clean or clear lines to ride. Once past the rock garden segments, riders were rewarded with 2 miles of trail that was fast and offered a lot of flow to maintain momentum. And to finish, an unusual half-mile long downhill towards the finish, culminating with a final tight turn and uphill burst to the line, completed the 4-mile lap - after which most of our team continued on to power through a second lap.
