This year, the Middle School Quiz Bowl Team won all five Tennessee tournaments they entered and also placed first and second in three of them. Consequently, the program qualified two teams for the National Academic Quiz Tournament Middle School National Championship in Chicago, Illinois. This provided the brave Quiz Bowlers an exciting opportunity to compete against the best teams in the country and as far away as Seoul, South Korea. The deep USN team was one of just 36 teams to send more than one team to the National Championship.

On Friday, May 9, the players headed to Chicago with a warm send-off from Ms. Douglas, Mr. Bezaire, and Ms. Westfall. At the National Championship, both teams enjoyed success against the stiff competition. Matthew Golann ’29, Asher Huffman ’29, Lucas Lupu ’31, and Oren Schwartz ’29 were 4 and 4 on Saturday and 3 and 1 on Sunday to go 7 and 5 during the competition, placing 63rd in the country. Clio Cherry-Pulay ’29, Elliot George ’29, Harper Hughey ’29, and Vihaan Sinha ’29 also won more games than they lost. They went 3 and 5 and then 3 and 1 for an overall record of 6 and 5. They are the 110th-best team in the country.

In Chicago, they were supported by a huge and passionate fan base. The players appreciate their families, who kept them fueled for the long two-day tournament so they could focus on buzzing fast. In addition, thanks to the generosity of Dr. Shavon, they got to try Chicago-style deep-dish pizza on Saturday night.
