Home sweet home -- swimming Tigers take on Cookeville & Upperman
Tigers race against Cookeville and Upperman HS teams in front of a great home crowd.
The USN Swimming team hosted Cookeville and Upperman High Schools in an unscored, non-divisional dual meet on Friday afternoon. In front of a great crowd of student supporters, the Tigers took first place in all 20 events that were contested.
The girls’ team was led by three double winners: junior Trudy Zou (160 IM, 100 breaststroke), senior Natalie TeSelle (200 freestyle), and senior Ky Hall (40 freestyle, 100 freestyle). Sophomore Margaret Luffman added an individual win of her own in the 100 backstroke. Notably, Margaret’s 100 backstroke time was a lifetime best and moved her up to 4th on the USN all-time top 10 list.
One of the more exciting races of the meet came in the girls’ 40 freestyle, where Ky and Margaret swam in a dead heat. Margaret used the race to showcase her underwater kicking prowess, which resulted in an expected disqualification (swimmers must surface by the 15-meter mark off each wall), but still got some of the biggest cheers of the afternoon.
Another standout swim came from junior Puja Jagasia, who earned her first Region cut in the 100 backstroke.
The boys were led by a trio of double winners: senior Kevin Chen, who won the 160 IM and 100 backstroke; sophomore Joshua Twillie, who won both the 40 and 100 freestyles; and senior Ben Werther, who won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Senior Mitchell Coverstone added a win in the 100 breaststroke.
Another highlight of the meet was seeing some of our younger swimmers expand their ranges. Freshman Mia Pretorius impressed us with her foray into the 200 freestyle, and sophomore Derek Brown showed major improvement in his 100 butterfly. Sophomore Henry Standard’s first 100 breaststroke was quite competitive; he hung close to event-winner Mitchell Coverstone for most of the race.
Nine of our swimmers will compete in some individual events this week at a Father Ryan-JP2-St. Cecilia meet with hopes of earning new State qualifying times. The rest of the team will resume competition in January, when we host our senior day meet on January 7.
