Swimming Tigers pick up three new State qualifiers at McCallie Invitational

Twenty-two members of the USN Swimming Team traveled to Chattanooga last Friday to compete in the 21st Annual McCallie Invitational. We had three primary goals going into this meet: to maximize our swims in finals, to earn Region and State qualifying times, and to swim faster at night than in the morning, and we were pleased to achieve all three pretty well.
Twenty-two members of the USN Swimming Team traveled to Chattanooga last weekend to compete in the 21st Annual McCallie Invitational. We had three primary goals going into this meet: to maximize our swims in finals, to earn Region and State qualifying times, and to swim faster at night than in the morning, and we were pleased to achieve all three.
Three different swimmers earned new State qualifying times for us: Kellon Patey (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Daniel Pannock (100 backstroke) and Will Jones (100 butterfly). Caroline Hollahan, Dylan Young, and Ben Werther each earned two new Region qualifying times, and Marina Escalas and Julianna Lewis, and Case Nieboer picked up one new Region cut each.
Earning individual swims in the Top 16 was a challenge for us, as the meet was significantly faster than in previous years (and faster in many ways than our Region Championship meet). Still, Mark Rusznak and Nicholas Ng earned two swims in the championship finals, and Neil Zheng dropped two seconds off his lifetime best in the 100 fly to earn a swim in the consolation finals. All five of our individual finals swims were faster at night, and Nicholas moved up from 7th to 3rd on the USN top 10 list.
All six of our relays also earned scoring swims. We weren’t able to piece together any relays to earn swims on the USN all-timeTop 10 list, which is mostly a sign that our Top 10 list is getting more competitive and harder to reach early in the season. Still, we were particularly excited by our strong relay splits across the board, particularly from Trudy Zou, Marina Escalas, Rob Dobie, and Mackenzie Myers.
Our swimmers of the meet were Neil Zheng, who earned his first swim on the Top 10 list in the 100 fly and dropped 1.5 seconds in his 100 freestyle leading off the “B” 400 freestyle relay, and Julianna Lewis, who rebounded from a disappointing first swim to post two lifetime bests and some great relay performances throughout the day.
The entire team returns to competition on Wednesday, December 4 in a double dual against Pope John Paul II and Father Ryan.
As part of a longstanding tradition, retired teachers and professionals from USN over the years came together to celebrate, connect, and reminisce during their annual luncheon in Durnan Auditorium.
It is common to have five or more University School of Nashville student-athletes sign college athletic commitment letters each year, and this year, USN saw eight more student-athletes commit to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. USN has several alumni participating in their chosen sport at the collegiate level from the Classes of 2021 through 2025.
