Last weekend, the boys Ultimate Frisbee team defeated MBA in the finals to become the USAU state champions of Tennessee.
On Saturday, the team defeated Independence High School, Brentwood High School, and McCallie High school by scores of 13-4, 13-3, and 13-2 to advance to Sunday’s semi-final round against Blackman High School. Blackman High School started strong and went up on USN 2-0. However, guided by the steady leadership of captains Will Shaw and Ryan Del Casino, USN rallied to tie the game and took half by a score of 8-5. USN returned strong after the half, scoring the first two points, and then went on to defeat Blackman 15-10.
After its semi-final victory, USN advanced to meet MBA in the finals on Sunday afternoon. Anticipating another epic battle against our ‘crosstown’ rivals, USN took the field with energy and emotion. The boys set the tone for the game on the first point as they forced an MBA turnover and immediately scored. While their dominant defense stifled MBA’s offense, their blazing fast offense efficiently built an 8-1 half –time lead. The intensity continued in the second half, and the boys decisively defeated MBA 15-3.
Though the entire team contributed to this repeat championship, credit for much of the boys’ success must be attributed to the passion, dedication, and leadership of our seniors: Ryan Del Casino, Will Knowles, David Kuhn, Eliot Linton, Mikeie Reiland, Will Shaw, and Gray Yarbrough. This Friday, the team travels to Philadelphia to compete in the USAU Eastern Championships with the intention of returning as this year’s eastern national champion.
