Boys' Ultimate Earns Top Five Finish at Paideia Cup
Mary Prasit
USN finished 3-2 to place fifth at the Paideia Cup in Decatur, Georgia on April 16 and 17. The Paideia Cup, otherwise known as the tournament for the “elite eight,” is one of the most notable and competitive youth tournaments in the country, drawing top teams from all over the country.
This year was no exception, with four of the teams bound for the Easterns Championships in addition to the top-ranked Paideia High School and a top-rated club team from Seattle. In the first game of the tournament, USN faced Columbia High School (from New Jersey), likely to be a top 5 seed at the Easterns Championships. Columbia came out strong, taking an early lead, but USN settled in to their offense and defense and battled back to tie the game and then maintain a one or two point differential for the remainder of the half. USN eventually fell to CHS by a score of 9-13 in a game that was much closer than the score reflects.
While disappointed by this initial loss, the team was heartened by their competitive play and the knowledge that they could have kept the game closer had they been a bit more patient and eliminated some of the mental mistakes. The boys defeated De Smet (from St. Louis) by a score of 12-8 in their second game and then immediately faced another top team, Holy Family Catholic, for their third and final game of the day. The disciplined, athletic play of HFC was too much for the Tigers, and the boys lost this game 9-13. (HFC went on to defeat Columbia HS on Sunday to finish third in the tournament after losing their first game on Sunday to the eventual tournament champions.)
After a somewhat disappointing Saturday, the boys took the fields on Sunday determined to win both of their games and finish strongly. The day began with a very athletic LC Bird team (from Virginia), and after falling behind 1-4, the USN boys caught fire and went on a 7-0 run to take half at 8-4. The Tigers dominated the remainder of the game, earning the victory by a score of 15-9. In their final game of the tournament, USN battled YHB (from Virginia) in a rematch of their epic battle in the final game at the 2010 Easterns.
With energy and ferocity, USN took a big lead early in the game. They maintained a large lead until the end, giving up a few points while the veteran players rested, and eventually won the game 15-12, a score that seems closer than the game was. The boys’ fifth-place finish ties their best finish ever at the Cup, and their competitive showing should result in a relatively high seed at the Easterns Championships.
