USN Ultimate Wins in Georgia

by Eli Motycka and Mary Prasit

The first weekend in April, University School of Nashville's Ultimate team defeated Blackman High School to win Freaknik 2011 in Cumming, Georgia.
On Saturday, USN finished 2-0 in pool play, defeating The McCallie School 13-5 and Lakeside High School 9-5 to take finish atop Pool A. During the last game of pool play, the wind began to pick up, gusting at almost twenty miles per hour; the wind would continue to affect play in the crossover games, which immediately followed the final round of pool play.

USN faced Blackman High School, a local rival and the tournament’s overall two seed, in its crossover game. USN went up two breaks, but soon lost its edge as Blackman tied it at four all. Both teams fought the wind, with several points continuing for eight to ten minutes. The game was capped with the score tied at 6-6, and Blackman held out to pull off the upset, taking the game 7-6.

On Sunday, teams arrived to find perfect playing conditions with calm winds and sunny skies. USN defeated Chamblee High School 15-6 in its first game to earn a place in the semi-finals. Sophomore Alex Russell stopped several deep Chamblee throws, and the speedy freshman Grant Given scored on several long throws.

Woodward Academy, having earned a first-round bye on Sunday, arrived for its midday semifinal match against USN. USN went up 3-1, but Woodward fought back to tie the game at threes. Teams traded points until USN scored three unanswered points to take half 8-5. Woodward came back after the half to tie the game, and after trading points, Woodward went up 13-11. The Tigers took a gut check and then completed an impressive three point run to take the lead at 14-13. The soft cap and hard cap came on during consecutive points, just as Woodward tied the game up at 15-15. USN Sophomore Mitchell Lutz completed a forehand huck to fellow Sophomore Jack Spiva to take the game by one, with a final score of 16-15.

In the other semifinal, Blackman convincingly defeated its opponent, setting up a rematch of Saturday’s crossover game with the championship to be decided by two Tennessee teams. Weary after their tough game against Woodward, USN showed off its depth and maintained a lead for most of the first half, finally taking half 8-6. USN kept a solid hold on its lead throughout the second half, thanks to the domineering defensive presence of senior Will Knowles, eventually taking the game from 12-9 to 15-10 and sealing its first tournament win of the season. Freshman Zack Stern distinguished himself with both a layout catch and an impressive defensive play.

USN hopes to follow up this win with an impressive showing at the Paideia Cup this weekend.
