The USN swimming team took on a competitive Brentwood Academy team last night in the team’s final division meet of the year. Our boys walked away with a 165-81 win, while the girls’ team fell 176-41, giving Brentwood Academy the combined win (257-206).
After honoring our three seniors, Tom Coogan, Cord Walker, and McLain Gore, the boys put on an impressive showing. USN boys captured 6 of the 8 individual events, thanks to Holt Akers-Campbell, McLain Gore, and Logan Jones, who won two events each. USN also won all three relays, thanks to these three along with Tom Coogan, Justin Maffett, John Coogan, and Cord Walker. The team also displayed some impressive depth – in the two events where B.A. swimmers won, our boys finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, allowing USN to “win the event." Our third and fourth swimmers, many of whom competed successfully in new and unfamiliar events, were absolutely vital to the overall team performance.
Notably, McLain Gore earned a new State qualifying time, and Will Knowles and Derek Shyr earned new Region qualifying times, Joey Simon, Will Johns, Ben Ghertner, and Eli Motycka also posted major lifetime bests, and Tom Coogan, John Coogan, and Justin Maffett continued to get closer to State qualifying times.
The girls were led by Caroline Graham, who earned two new Region qualifying times, and Sarah Alberts, who earned a new Region qualifying time in the 100 fly.
With this win, the boys’ team wraps up the MTHSSA Division II Championship with a perfect 6-0 record. The girls’ team falls to 1-5, and the team’s combined record falls to 4-2.
