The USN swimming team hosted a slate of teams – MLK Magnet, Franklin Road Academy, Christ Presbyterian Academy, St. Cecilia Academy, and Hillsboro High School -- for our Senior Day meet on Saturday, January 22 at Centennial Sportsplex. In our final competition before the region and state championship meets, Coach Stern and Coach Rosenthal did a wonderful job of encouraging, managing, and keeping the team focused, from the first whistle to the final finish.
The Tigers won all the dual meet matchups on both the boys’ and girls’ sides.
The girls’ team was led by double event winners Olivia Schwarz and Anna Hulan. Schwarz captured the 200 freerstyle and 100 breaststroke, and Hulan won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Schwarz’s breaststroke swim and both Hulan’s swims earned individual spots on the USN all-time top 10 list, notably. Emma Schwarz also won an individual event, running away with the 500 and swimming a best time in the process. The girls’ 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays also won, with contributions from Olivia, Anna, Kara Grace Hess, and Caroline Cramer. Both of those relays earned spots on the USN all-time top 10 list, and the 200 medley relay performance was the fastest in-season swim in school history.
The boys’ individual wins came from Jack Wellons, who dropped four seconds along the way to winning the 200 freestyle, and William Grobmyer, who tied for first in the 100 breaststroke. Owen Block finished second in the 50 freestyle and earned a new state cut in the process. The USN boys also finished 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay, closing out the meet with a good punctuation mark.
Notably, this meet represented a day for significant improvement for many of our swimmers. Multiple lifetime bests were earned by Jessica Penilton, Iris Li, Isaac Spiller, Henry Gatto, (who earned his first two region cuts in the 100 and 200 freestyles), Ray Nakagawa (who earned a new region cut in the 100 freestyle), Daniel Stark, Mark Luschen, and Jack Wellons.
The team would like to thank the faculty, administrators, and students who came out to support -- it was absolutely wonderful to have such a strong presence from the USN community at the meet.
The Tigers look to the championship season now, which begins on Friday with the MTHSSA Region championship. We will take 20 qualifiers to the meet in search of more best times, state qualifying times, and an improvement over our 8th place team finish from 2020.
