Fall Break MTB Racing in East TN

by Steve Smail
The middle and high school mountain bikers headed east of Knoxville to Morristown TN for our 4th race of the season at the hilly and wide open Panther Creek State Park. We were at reduced capacity for this race as it was held on the Sunday of our Fall Break.

While some rain outwash from the tropical storm soaked us on Saturday night after a Saturday course recon, the conditions on Sunday were damp and cool but luckily not too messy. Exposed roots and rocks posed the biggest technical challenges, with some significant repeated climbs presenting some big heart and lung challenges.

We only had 3 middle school racers, with 8th grader Ella Cheek finishing 15th in a little over an hour for her lap, Tate Green competing in 7th grade finishing 17th in 30:09 for a solo lap, and happily racing after a broken pinky finger from Race #2, Christopher Haynes returned to form with 2 full laps, clocking in at about 26 minutes per lap, finishing 16th.

In the high school categories, our JV boys once again raced hard and consistently, with Alexander Haynes covering 3 laps in 1:14 for 17th place, Raleigh Parr 3 laps in 1:22, Cameron Stenhouse 3 laps in 1:28 (including a slow last lap due to a dislocated sternum that luckily has popped back in - yes that’s a thing that can happen, apparently), and Yoshi D’Souza riding 2 laps in 1:03 finishing 42nd. Isaac Gorden competed in the sophomore category covering 2 laps in 59 minutes as the mist and clouds began to burn off for the day.

JV girls cyclist Lydia West raced a single lap in 51 minutes for 10th place, while freshman speedsters Eleanor Shepard and Jamie List accelerated to 3rd and 5th places, with Eleanor once again posting negative lap splits and standing on the podium wearing the very nice new hockey scarf to show some USN colors.

Overall, Alexander Haynes is in 18th out of 82 JV boys for the race series, with Eleanor holding on to 3rd in Freshman Girls. Parr, Stenhouse and D’Souza still remain in the top half of those 80+ JV riders. Chris Haynes sits 13th out of 70 8th grade boys and Tate Green also 13th out of 60 7th grade boys.

Overall our teams for the series are 10th out of 28 HS teams and 11th out of 24 MS teams. With only one NICA race remaining in Sewanee (a.k.a State Championships), there are not a lot of points separating our teams and riders from moving into the top 10 spots overall, with some podium possibilities, too.

It should be a great day on Monteagle mountain to watch our final mountain bike action for the season, so plan your fall color road trip and join us on Sunday, Nov. 3rd.
