Tigers Defeat Mount Juliet on Senior Day

Justin Karpinos
The USN Swimming Tigers honored the class of 2016 at our Senior Day home meet last Thursday.  The USN boys’ team defeated Mount Juliet High School 85-41, and the USN girls’ won 87-64, giving the combined team a 172-105 win.

Before the meet, we celebrated the senior class -- Kevin Chen, Mitchell Coverstone, Ky Hall, Caroline Hollahan, Jack Reed, Natalie TeSelle, Ben Werther, Effie Zuberer-Davis -- for all their contributions over the past four years.  This group has been particularly tight with one another and have presided over the most integrated combined swim team we've had in years.

The opening medley relays were particularly strong, with great energy and contributions from multiple individuals.  Our girls’ A team of Ky Hall, Trudy Zou, Natalie TeSelle, and Mia Pretorius finished with a season best time, as did our boys’ team of Kevin Chen, Mitchell Coverstone, Josh Twillie, and Jack Reed.

The rest of the evening saw some close races and good energy from the Tigers.  Best times were few and far between, which is pretty normal at this phase of our training.  Still, it was a good jump start back into competition that we hope to build on in the coming weeks.  We enjoyed a great crowd of students, parents, and alumni, and the boys’ basketball team; it was a wonderful reminder of how good it is to have home meets here on campus.

The girls’ team was led by junior Trudy Zou, who won the 160 IM and 100 breaststroke, both in season best times.  Senior Ky Hall won the 100 freestyle, and her classmate Natalie TeSelle captured the 200 freestyle.  Natalie combined with Katie Watke, Caroline Hollahan, and Annie French to win a particularly close 320 freestyle relay, which was a great ending to the meet.

The boys’ team got two wins from Josh Twillie, who captured the 160 IM and 100 butterfly.  Senior Mitchell Coverstone won the 100 freestyle in a lifetime best, and
freshman Graham Shockley earned his first ever individual win, taking the 200 freestyle on the strength of back half.  Senior Jack Reed won the 40 freestyle, his first ever individual dual meet win.

Other strong swims came from Elliott Clark in the 100 breaststroke, Katie Watke in the 100 backstroke, and Mia Pretorius in the 200 freestyle.

A special thank you to all our parent volunteers who timed and scored the meet for us, and to Coach Scouten and Ms. Beaty for helping with the Senior Day festivities!
