High School Mountain Bike Team to Form for Fall, 2013

A new athletic opportunity for high school students is available starting fall, 2013: off-road bicycle racing.
Governed by NICA (www.nationalmtb.org), the new Tennessee HS Mountain Biking League (www.tennesseemtb.org) will begin its inaugural season with 4 off-road mountain biking races scheduled August through November, 2013. High school teachers and cyclists Trent Boysen and Steve Smail, who are coordinating the team, are in the process of obtaining NICA coaching licenses.

The team is open to both girls and boys in grades 9-12, and we will begin meeting and holding introductory practices later in the spring and through the summer, with the season formally starting August 1. Our team, the league and the race schedule are set up with some flexibility. If students have already committed (or are planning to commit) to a fall sport, there's still an opportunity to race while training and competing with a primary fall sport (pending navigation of the usual busy schedules and discussions with a primary fall sport's head coach).

More than 2 dozen interested 9-11th grade students signed up after HS Assembly. In the next few weeks the opportunity will be presented to the 8th grade students.

If you would like more information, or if you as a parent have an interest in helping with the team, please reply to Steve Smail (ssmail@usn.org) and we'll make sure you get future announcements and communications.
